Six Pies...the AMAs...and a Haircut

Pumpkin Pie & Taylor Hicks' new haircut...a lot to be thankful for.

Over the last two nights, I have baked six pies for Thanksgiving. I make all the desserts every year to help out my mom. (This was a light year...usually I do seven pies and a cake.)

So...in honor of Thanksgiving...I offer you three family recipes from the Powers.

In honor of all that is music...I offer you a few of my scattered thoughts on Tuesday night's American Music Awards.

And in honor of how hawt Taylor Hicks looks with his new haircut...I offer you drool-covered pics of the Monkbot Supreme.

Sue Powers' Magic Pumpkin Pie

1 9-inch unbaked pie shell
2 cups canned pumpkin
1 1/2 cups (15.5 oz. can) Eagle Brand Sweetened condensed Milk
1 egg
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp cinnamon

In large-size mixing bowl, blend together all ingredients. Turn mixture into pie shell. Bake in 375 F moderate oven until sharp-blade knife inserted near center comes out clean. 50-55 minutes. Cool. Refrigerate at least 1 hour.

I used to anticipate the AMAs like Christmas...well...maybe like Labor Day...but still...it was a big deal for me growing up.

But, I'm now grown up...and I could care less about this show.

I care so very little that I couldn't tell you who won what...even if you paid me. The only reason I watched was to see Taylor. However, since I did watch, allow me to share my thoughts on some of the performers and presenters.

Kicking off with audience shots and a great performance by Beyonce', the auditorium boasted the biggest collection of bored-looking people I've seen in my life. No one looked comfortable in their own skin...and no one really looked happy to be there.

Jimmy Kimmell hosted the event and...poor guy...he obviously didn't get the memo that he was supposed to be funny.

His jokes were obvious and, at times, crass. He joked about Fed-X being a loser...Snoop Dogg being a pothead...and Tony Hawk breaking his penis.

How lovely.

Britney Spears made her first appearance since filing for her D-I-V-O-R-C-E. And...ever the lady...clomped out on stage, chomping on a wad of gum. She must have shared her pack of Bubbleliscious with members of Nickleback who came on stage to accept the first award of the night...and were also chewing away.

Somehow I feel their parents failed them for this behavior. It makes me sad.

Carrie Underwear...I mean Underwood...performed next. She looked so pretty and performed like a pro...even when she stood from her stool and revealed that someone had obviously stolen the front of her dress. It's a good think she had shaved. This time of year, my upper thighs are like Shetland ponies...so let's hope and pray I never get the front of my skirt stolen.

The next performance was by the oh-so refined and demur Pussycat Dolls. I hated their "song" and their "singing" and their "dancing." The only thing that made them worth watching was when one of them almost busted as she was trying to mount a chair. I'm assuming that chair mounting is now considered a sexy move. Maybe I should work up a routine.

Josh Groban followed. He sang a little sharp at times but overall it was a nice song. I just hate that I had a hard time concentrating on him because of the flip-flopping Jumbotron behind him of scenic mountains and deserts and sunset. About halfway through, I began screaming "Make it stop! Make it stop!" And, at that point, I kind of lost focus on Joshie.

Nelly Fertado was next. She also used the Jumbrotron in her performance. It was simulating a giant IMAX of Weather. But, oddly enough, my focus wasn't on the Jumbotron for Fertado's song. I couldn't stop staring at her bangs. I swear...she had more bangs than she had head. I think they started from the base of her neck and came over the top of her noggin. They were truly mesmerizing...and a little frightening.

Chess Pie & Chest Hair...I don't know which I like better.

Don's Favorite Chess Pie
as told by Sue Powers

Serves 6-8 (pansy servings) or 2-4 (Powers servings)

1 9-inch pie shell, unbaked
3 eggs
1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 cups sugar
Pinch salt (don't make it cry, though)
1/4 tbsp vinegar

Prepare unbaked pie shell. Mix butter and sugar and simmer slowly, stirring for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly, stirring constantly. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well. Add vanilla, salt, and vinegar, mix well. Pour filling into pie shell and bake at 400 F for 15 minutes; reduce heat to 350 F and bake for 20-30 minutes. Shake pie gently. It is done when center quivers slightly. Do not try to double recipe. Pie keeps well in the refrigerator overnight. Can freeze and reheat.

Kimmell came out and tried his hand again at making a joke. While introducing Billy Ray Cyrus, Kimmell said Cyrus had the worst hair in show business when his career first began. But Billy Ray trumped Kimmell's attempt at humor by walking out with an even worse hair-do than his original mullet. He sported the Keith Urban. And, folks, let me tell you...it was truly one achy, breaky hair-do.

Kate Walsh (Grey's Anatomy's Addison) came out with fellow cast members, Isaiah Washington and Justin Chambers. Kate looked absolutely amazing...her legs were as shiny as a teenage fry cook's forehead. But Chambers looked as if he couldn't get out of there fast enough...can't say I blame him. I was glad I WASN'T there. The three of them introduced Snow Patrol...some European group who, apparently have had their song downloaded a million times. Suffice it to say, I wasn't in that million...I didn't recognize song and thought it was horrible. Plus, when they were introduced, I was thinking members of the Soul Patrol were about to perform...so, yeah, I was a little disappointed.

Then Gwen Stefani came out to perform. At first I thought she was Chrissy Snow and I started searching the stage for Jack and Janet. But it was Gwen...sportin' some killer Suzanne Somers' hair. Then...while my head was still spinning from her hair...Stefani started singing strains of "Lonely Goatherd" from "The Sound of Music." I felt my chest swell with pride because I realized I was as cool as Stefani...for you see...I carry "Lonely Goatherd" with me at all times on my iPod (and, uh, I can sing it by heart...including the yodels...blushes).

But I quickly came to my senses and realized I wasn't all that cool after all. Stefani began mixing yodels and grunts and raps and yells and one very kickin' drum corps to create "Wind It Up"...a mix between "Goatherd and "My Humps." I gotta admit...it was great. Very entertaining and fun and original and creative. I'll be downloading it for sure.

JZ performed next and I left the room to check on my pecan pies.

I came back to find Vanessa Williams presenting some reflective moments on the AMAs and she looked FABULOUS...better than any performer. I want to be Vanessa Williams.

Blah, blah, blah...Paris Hilton...blah, blah, blah...Jamie Foxx...blah, blah, blah...Sharon Stone's nipples...blah, blah, blah...Dixie Chicks, who would have sounded great if it weren't for Natalie Manes losing her breath and the sound cutting in and out.

OOoooo...Tenacious D...I remember when they were funny. Tonight, however, they performed an entire song pushing their sure-to-be-crappy movie, "Pick of Destiny." I guess it's supposed to be ironic. But it's not. It's just sad and lame and all I can think of at this point is that I'm now DYING to see Taylor.

Mary J. Blige sings. She's looking great...sounding pretty good, too. I just don't like her music...but she is working it.

I have, however, at this point in the show, come to a verdict about the music industry today (to build a little more on the conversation at Gray's the other day). I think the Buggles were the most prolific group of our time....video (all of television for that matter) truly has killed the radio star. Between Sharon's nipples, Nelly's bangs, the Pussycat Dolls' ummm...err...uhhhh...singing...I couldn't shake the notion that the music industry is focused more on show than on sound. And it's truly sad.

I would so rather hear good music and have my own thoughts about it than to be sold it via sex, clothes, make-up, jewelry, pyrotechnics, Jumbotrons, bangs, and bad jokes.

...climbs down from soapbox

On to Lionel Richie. It's during his 1 millionth performance of "All Night Long" that we are treated to the best shot of the evening...Pat Boone, wearing gold lame', clapping his hands, and jammin' in the street...all night long.

Finally, Taylor comes out and presents some award for, I think, Hip Hop and R&B. He is co-presenting with Kirk Franklin (who had won an award earlier in the evening for best inspirational artist). Taylor has gotten his gray locks shorn and...DANG...he looks good. He looked excited to be there...and I was excited FOR him to be there. Plus, he did a great job. It's refreshing to see true enthusiasm for such an event. I only hope he can maintain that fresh approach...and not ever get jaded and cocky...like so many of the artists who were there last night.

The next performance was by Fallout Boy. I have never heard this group perform. I know none of their songs. I'm not even a big fan of screaming rock anthems. But, I have to say, these guys were tight. I was totally blown away. They obviously took pride in making the best SOUNDS as possible. I respected their performance tremendously and may have to check out their other stuff online.

All throughout the show, the announcer (who had raided Doc Sevrenson's jacket collection) kept saying "Up next, Barry Manilow." But Manilow didn't show. I kept wondering why they were saving him until the end.

Then he came out and sang...and I knew why.

He was great. Barry Manilow, ladies and gentlemen...the only man alive who can pull off "jazz hands." Barry...what the world needs now...is more like you, baby.

Best acceptance speeches of the night...hands down, came from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They were hilarious and fun and showed that they have talent and a quite a knack for entertaining...even via satellite from London. Their impromptu rap and mockery of the timed acceptance speeches were lots of fun.

The finale was performed by Snoop Dogg and some other guy (sorry, I don't care enough to look up his name). The song was simply touching and heartfelt...as was the opening shot...a close-up of a pole dancer's butt. I'm sure her mother is proud. Sorry, I know Taylor thinks highly of Snoop Dogg, but I don't. This was terrible.

Okay...before NOLAgirl and DD have a stroke wondering why I didn't mention the performance of our beloved John Mayer...please let me explain.

I think Mayer should have been the finale. His was the best performance of the night. He hit every lick. His pitch was great. He was entertaining. The song was wonderful. And he didn't look too shabby, either.

So...because the AMAs screwed up and let Snoop handle the finale...I decided to rectify it here and end with Mayer.

Oh...and a parting shot of our Monkbot's new 'do, coupled with my Aunt Edith's famous Pecan Pie.

Pecan Pie & Taylor Hicks...I like my men like I like my pies...a little nutty.

Aunt Edith's Pecan Pie
as told to Aunt Ada then written to Sue Powers in the 1970s

3 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 cup white Karo
1 cup pecans
1 tsp. vanilla
Pinch of salt

Beat eggs. Add sugar and stir well. Add Karo, vanilla, and salt. Add pecans and pour into 9-inch unbaked pie shell. Bake in hot oven, 425 F, for about 15 minutes or until crust begins to brown and pie begins to bubble. Then turn oven to 350 F and bake until top is brown but filling is still shaky when pie pan is moved. about 20-30 minutes. Then turn oven to 250 F and cook till filling is firm and nicely browned.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my monkbots!

Hey Shelley...thanks for the recipes....ummm and the pictures if I may say.

I only watched the first two hours of the AMA's because the season Finale for Rescue Me was on tonight and I wanted to watch with hubby. Luckily Taylor came on just before he turned the channel.

Squee's Hubby: "Oh, I guess I'm not gonna be allowed to turn the channel NOW, am I?" (insert eye roll here)

Happily, Taylor nervously made it through his bit just in time for "Rescue Me" (and in time to rescue me from hubby's wrath!)

I had a lot of the same thoughts that you did during the show, Shelley. I don't remember the last time I watched a music awards show was, and now I remember why. For the majority of the "artists", it has become a showcase for backup dancers. It's as if these people don't think they can be entertaining enough as themselves, without having someone to supplement the entertainment. This makes me sad.

What makes me happy, though, is Taylor's new haircut.

But seriously, Taylor, to me, is the antithesis of everything that is wrong with music today. He IS entertaining enough just as a musician, singer, and part of a band. MORE than entertaining enough.

My husband brought up during Lionel Richie's song, that you can sure tell when the artists are singing live and when they are lipsynching. We agreed that we would rather hear the odd "off" note than see a fake, perfect performance.

About Gwen Stefani: I have to disagree with you on this one. I think that song (!?) that she did was ridiculous. I just didn't get it. But to each their own!

I am sad I missed John Mayer's performance. What did he sing?

Oh yeah, and Taylor's new haircut makes me happy!

Sigh...as life is all about compromises, I am just goin to say, you can keep Taylor, sassy haircut an' all, but gimme a piece of pumkin pie! And pecan Pie. (I don't know what chess pie is, but |will surely give it a try.)

This is too much. They are too tasty-looking, and I have just had my bowl of "Special K", having heard on the radio last week that you might as well eat the packaging, and get as much fibre and nutrition. Sigh again. Look at that deep honey-golden crust.... those cheeky pecans...this is pie porn, I tell you. I am a fine upstanding citizen, but I have my limits...CLUNK! ( picks glass fragments from teeth.)

Okay fellow monkbettes, please eat an extra slice of pie for me, and enjoy your Thanksgiving!

Thanks for the recipes!

Hey,
I know "dork diddle" about AMA and the "artists" that appeared. I don't profess to know. I am just a tad better at baking pies.
Your article verbalized exactly what I was thinking the entire time I was watching the show, featuring people who never smile and seem to be angry at something all the time. A few faces , Carrie Underwood for one, were genuinely cheery; Taylor stood out like a black bear at a polar bear convention. He seemed happy to be there albeit uncomfortable with the people around him; a bunch of depressing souls . Don't ever succumb to that mentality...please.
However, I am going to try the pumpkin pie recipe...if it is a failure, I know where to find you.

I know it's early...but I gotta go ahead and give Squeebee the Official Prize of the Day for

"It's as if these people don't think they can be entertaining enough as themselves, without having someone to supplement the entertainment. "

Rowan...you DEFINITELY need to try chess pie. It's sooooo rich and good. The top gets candied and inside is sugary goodness.

Mouser, you are so right about Carrie and Taylor seeming happy. It makes a difference in the enjoyment level of watching things like that if you think the folks are actually having fun. I mean, who wants to watch a bunch of sad sacks?

I laughed til I cried as I was reading this article today. Shell, thank goodness little old Carrie didn't stand til after the song about Jesus being with her as she left Mom's:) I think Mom would have made her take a blanket with her on her journeys:) Would have loved her performance throughout had it not been totally a distraction with the shorts gaping through the huge opening. I think also that she had to have had hair weaved in AI for her hair (with the lights shining through) looked like she may have had shorts on the back of her head!!! Way thin!!! Didn't watch past 8 as old House had to have my attention. Can't wait to have a piece of pie as always you did an excellent job. Bought Cool Whip to go on the warmed up piece of pumpkin I'm gonna have, we all know who will devour the chess pie:) Dad will eat one and hide the other. All of you Monkbots out there have a blessed Thanksgiving. Still have tears in my eyes from laughter at this account of the program last night.

DAMN! I miss Johnnie boy. *is sad* Fill me in!

I have to say I liked Beyonce and Carrie's performances the best of what I saw. By far.

It's interesting that you brought up how this is what the music industry has come to today. My parents were watching the show too, and at every turn they were like WTF? The Pussycat Dolls?? What is this crap? My first reaction was to try to explain that this was what was "in" right now to my clearly out-of-touch parents, but then I was like wait a sec, I am freakin 25 years old, and that crap is not even "in" to me, so I ain't even gonna try to defend it!

So I didn't. I laughed and shook my head along with them. Then my mom got all excited when Josh Groban came on b/c she knows of him .... and then he sounded awful (we could agree on that as well) and couldn't decide if he was singing opera or "pop"/"adult contemporary."

Pies and pretty pictures! Damn, I am easy to please!

Damn. Am I just that easy to please? I enjoyed the AMA's and thought Jimmy Kimmel was funny and that most of the acts were really good.

My particular favorites of the night were Josh Groban (what else can you say about that voice?), Gwen Stefani (she is my girl and if I could be a rockstar, I'd wanna be her...I'm so glad you didn't diss her! She is such a creative artist.), Fall Out Boy (I'm so surprised you've never heard of them. They had 2-3 major hits last year...I got sick to death of them b/c they were so overplayed. This song/performance was awesome. To me, that was a refreshing performance.),and oddly enough b/c I don't really like him....Jamie Fox (I thought his "ode" to his Grandma was very touching. And lastly, Snow Patrol...a band that I adore. Although I'm getting tired of this particular song b/c it's being overplayed (damn those radio programmers). They have much better songs that are played on "alternative" radio.

I missed the last half hour...including John Mayer and Snoop. Too bad. :(

I only hated one performance: Jay-Z. I have a lot of respect for him, but that song is stupid..."Wave to me, wave to me." Ummm...okay.

I was fascinated with the way Barry M's face never moved. He can sing without moving his face at all. Weird.

Addison Montgomery, M.D. was frikin GORGEOUS. I love her.

I don't like acceptance speeches...that part bores the heck outta me, but Kirk Franklin's was awesome. (It grates on my nerves to have some hoochie grinding on the stage who later gets up and thanks her "Lord and Saviour" for giving her the opportunity to sing foul lyrics to the 11 year old children of America.)I love that he said that he hoped, b/c he professes his faith publicly, that people could look at his life and be proud. That brought tears to my eyes.

Ummm....I can't really think of anything else right now. Oh, Britney needs to ban gum from her life. Trashy!

Duh! I forgot to mention Taylor! He looked beautiful. So handsome. However, I think y'all are seriously biased if you saw some special level of excitement in him that you couldn't see in anyone else. I mean, I agree that he looked happy and nervous and excited, but I saw that same thing in many other performers and presenters...

Shelly!! you are hysterical.. for someone that didn't watch much that was PRICELESS!

All I could think of during the part of the show I watched (BT) was:

1.) Oh, this music sux

2.) The camera guy, on the floor in front of the stage, took every crotch shot there was to be had.

3.) Why did they pair Taylor with a guy (who had a really nice acceptance speech earlier) who only came up to his waist?

4.) L O V E the haircut

5.) Taylor, watching this show to see you present an award comes under the heading of."I cannot believe I am doing this".

I usually enjoy award shows, but then usually the only ones I watch are the Country Awards ..CMAs & the like. The people there are usually dressed well, see very happy to be there & I can understand the words. Oh now I sound like my father ... lol and now that doesn't sound so bad to me!

Happy Happy Thanksgiving!!

BTW ...Love the new look around here/ did you re-decorate?

Bama...I had HEARD OF Fallout Boy...but never HEARD them.

Remember...I don't listen to the radio...I can't stand all the R&B stuff.

By the way...why do y'all think singers thank God and the Lord and their fans but actors only thank their producers and agents and directors and parents/spouses?

Shelley the pies are awesome .. I will have to try the Chess Pie! You win the "Domestic Goddess Award" .. sorry I don't have the official medal!

Well, Shelley my friend, if you listened to "alternative" (I hate that word b/c it doesn't really encompass the scope of the music) radio stations...you could hear Fall Out Boy sans R&B, sans rap(well, except when used by Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, etc.), sans pop...I'm just sayin! :) However, their songs from last year were everywhere...on my morning radio show, tv, restaurants, even on the little train that runs from the back parking lot at Fair Park to the actual State Fair. I wanted to jab my earholes with a pencil everytime I heard them. I think this album sounds less "pop" and more gritty. Very good song last night.

Maybe a lot of "musicians" grew up singing in the church choir. I don't know...maybe it's just trendy in that industry. I just can't stand it. It cheapens His name.

I thought it was interesting that Kirk Franklin didn't actually thank God in his speech! I guess it's a given?

Oh, I forgot to mention that I though Dr. Burke aka Isaiah Washington was weird in the way he read his lines - was that just me?

Since I've said way too much lately, I'll refrain from opinions today.

All I can say is, I love you guys. I appreciate each of you for your wit, sincerity, intelligence, thoughtfulness and friendship.

Never thought these words would come across my lips but, "This year, I am thankful for all things Monkbot."

I bid each of you a very Blessed & Happy Thanksgiving, and I leave you with this...

"Even though I clutch my blanket and growl when the alarm rings each morning, thank you, Lord, that I can hear. There are many who are deaf.

Even though I keep my eyes tightly closed against the morning light as long as possible, thank you Lord, that I can see. There are many who are blind.

Even though I huddle in my bed and put off the effort of rising, thank you, Lord that I have the strength to rise. There are many who are bedridden.

Even though the first hour of my day is hectic, when socks are lost, toast is burned, and tempers are short, thank you, Lord, for my family. There are many who are lonely.

Even though our breakfast table never looks like the pictures in magazines and the menu is at times unbalanced, thank you, Lord for the food we have. There are many who have no job.

Even though I grumble and bemoan my fate from day to day and wish my circumstances were not so modest, thank you, Lord, for the gift of life."

Awww -- I made a mental note to watch the AMAs. I thought about it vaguely before lapsing into unconsciousness after an extremely long day. I am sorry that I missed Taylor, but I hope to find the video clip somewhere. Other people's rabid fandom benefits me in peculiar ways.

Regarding awards shows, I will be excited when Taylor is up for something and will certainly watch. However, I kind of stopped watching them a few years ago. It stopped being exciting and uplifting and became massively narcissistic and self-congratulatory. And distasteful in some way. I think most performers have a bit of “lookatme lookatme lookatme!” But the preening just got to be too much. I would rather watch my son and his class sing “Let There Be Peace Everywhere” and “Smells Like Thanksgiving” (I can smell the turKEY, I can smell the pie-EYE). Give me a bunch of four and five year olds singing with gusto and hand gestures to a scantily-clad woman humping a chair any time. Does that make me staid and matronly? Sigh.

I don’t mind other people’s knickers showing on national television – it makes me snicker -- but I with y’all on the whole “I’d like to thank my lord and savior” thing. It always seemed ironic, and I enjoyed it on that level, and then it began to annoy me. It seemed dismissive, and I would have to remind myself that I could not judge their intent or motivation and then I would feel guilty and it all just became too much effort. And the songs had progressively more suckage.

Thanks so much for the recap – it saved valuable hours of my life. I love Kirk Franklin – thanks for mentioning him. (It makes me want to … Stomp!) I will go look for pictures of Taylor. He looks more Clooneyesque than ever. Very nice.

This year, in an unfortunate twist of fate, I am responsible for the WHOLE thanksgiving feast. I have never made a pumpkin pie (because I don’t like it) or a pecan pie (despite the fact that I love it). I am inspired and insane, and will surprise everyone with my baking efforts. I blame you, Shelley. Hmmmm…. Chess pie sounds very Southern and cool.

To all fellow monkbots far and wide, my fondest affection and best wishes for your holidays. This has been a wacky year and one of the things I will put on my to-be-thankful-for list will be the people that I have come to know here. I am not sure how you all came to occupy a space in my heart, but you have. May the joys of family and pie be with you, and may other people be washing the dishes if you have to cook.

Happy Thanksgiving,

MD

Awww, Mind Doc you bring a lil tear to the corner of my eyeball!

Maybe one of the reasons I like award shows so much is because I'm single and w/o children and don't have anything more important to occupy my time and fill my life. Sigh...Of course, it could just be that I can pretty much be entertained by dripping water...

I want to learn the pie song! I love food songs! Fried ham, fried ham, cheese and boloney. And after the macaroni, we'll have fun with pickles and pretzels, and then we'll have some more friiied hammmm!!

MD, the chess pie is soooo very southern, but in my youth, foolish and ignorant, I got the recipe and without even looking at the ingredients went to the A&P (are they still around?) and had a clerk help me go through all the spices looking for "chess" Honest:) I am thankful that most of my family will be here and that Shell bakes all the deserts!!!! Y'all have a blessed day and a thankful one too!!!

I am also thankful for all things Monkbot. I am jealous that Shrew has a special guest this week. Cannot wait until my turn here.

I must say that I liked the haircut too - Squee. You did mention his haircut, didn't you?

Shelley -- Love, love the pictures of the pies. I must try the chess pie sooon. Thanks for all of the recipes and great recap of the AMA's. ( I feel very vindicated that there are others at home thinking the same way. )

Happy Thanksgiving -- dear friends !

Oh Libby...I didn't mean to mislead anyone...I don't have the MonkBot...I was just saying I am glad he exists.

Hey Shel,
Loved the recap. You missed Jamie Foxx, though. Not into his style of music, but he did and outstanding job. He was real, emotive, and expressive without being manipulative. His song was a tribute to his grandmother (?) who has passed.
I thought he, Gwen Stefani, and John Mayer were the acts of the night. Oh, and Taylor...WOW.
