Two Words...Chris Sligh

Chris Sligh is from South Carolina...has hair like Justin Guarini...has a sense of humor like John Mayer...and sings like a mellow rocker (loved the audition but not too crazy about the song on his MySpace page).

Seems he's also a Christian...like our little Sean Michel.

Watch out for this guy...he's smart and talented...with personality out the wazoo.

I like him...he's my new favorite.

(I know, I know...I'm fickle...but, honestly, this guy is SO likeable.)

---

On another music note (pun intended)...The Police will reunite for this year's Grammy Awards.

I know I should be excited...but I'm not.

What's wrong with me?

---

Also...I don't want this to become a glitter-bashing post...but there is something a little off about a glitter banner for Sean Michel. I just can't put my finger on why.

Don't get me wrong...it's great that folks like him and they did a lovely job with their banners...it just is strange to me for some reason. (Also, I'm a little uncomfortable with the "Sean's Disciples" thing. As far as I know, there is only one Man to be a disciple of...and, though He looks like Sean...He's much older.)

Again...NO bashing of anyone's banner. But help me to understand why this seems odd to me.

Also...tell me what a "Camel Shiner" is? She asks nervously, hoping it's not dirty.

---

Shelley, Alexa (hickschicks4soul) and I love this guy too. He is hysterical, and he can sing. His myspace was funny and loved the "Christ follower first" comment. He also liked Taylor's cd more than Chris's which is a plus. I don't know how far he will get, but I can't wait to watch the ride.
P.S. you're not fickle, you just suffer from American Idolitis. I even thought Simon was kind of charming tonight--what's up w/that???

I. love. this. guy. A smartass after my own heart. And he has a very nice tone to his voice. So many male favorites this year, I almost hope they don't all make it through Hollywood so I don't have to choose, haha.

Chris I heard about weeks ago, so checked out the myspace. Wasn't blown over by that by was indeed by his humor on AI tonight. He is so much like John Mayer, regarding the humor, the flow of words and complete sardonicism, it's a realm I love and adore. I'm watching and riding with you!

Regarding glitter for banners on Sean that is sick. Not in a good hip 'sick' way, just stupid sick. He's a Jesus hippy guy, not Poppy glitter and rainbows. Geez. How embarrassing for Sean. Besides early info and such... they need not toil for long at their glitter boards. I could be wrong....
Suffering from American Idolitis - hope it is not terminal.

Hey, "House" was absolutely great tonight. (How's that for random?)

I have quit watching American Idol on purpose. Sigh. I didn't watch House tonight because I actually read the anniversary posts on GC. I don't read anything but news on GC now and I rarely post but tonight I did both. Back in the day and all that. I miss it. You know what I mean.

I liked Chris before he even sang...Also my new favorite for this season. Is anyone else thinking that all the women who have gotten through sound the same??? That breathy, shrieking sound really gets on my nerves. And I know I shouldn't even mention this, but no one else is here to vent to at the moment---I started to watch a certain performance on the Today Show this morning, and couldn't continue...had to change the channel. Thank goodness the right person won is all I have to say. And sorry I missed chat last night Shrew...it's been a strange couple of days with baby getting ready to appear...you can tell it's soon cause I'm getting tired, sore, and bitchy. ;) XOXO to all.

Love to KD and the baby!! Many prayers sent your way.

I appreciate the sentiment on the Sean banner (yikes! to Constantine's pouty banner. Just ... yikes), but it is a little disconcerting. I hope that his reaction is more amused and/or touched than anything else. Not the reaction that I remember when Paula told Mandisa that people would be running out to "worship at the church of Mandisa" -- I believe that she looked horror-struck. I would guess that "Sean's Disciples" might be a little off-putting.

I don't get the whole banner thing -- is it, or has it become, just a part of fandom -- like painting your face at a game? Dunno.

I googled "Camel Shiner" no hits, and not in the Urban Dictionary ( I loooove slang). And checked with my daughter -- who is the definitive source for off-color and/or internet terminology. She did not know it.

I don't know why my Tivo cut off after 10 minutes, but it did, so I did not see Chris' audition. Grrrr ... Must go YouTube him.

And House was good -- lurve Hugh Laurie.

By the way...I'll ask Zan about Camel Shiner---if he doesn't know it or can't find it, no one can. ;)

mind doc (I can't get used to dr bob yet), I had the same reaction to Constantine's pouty banner--it made me crack up.

I have no idea what a camel shiner is--maybe an inside joke kinda thing on that thread??

Did anybody read on Chris Sligh's webblog that if he gets to the finals he's going to call his fans the "fro patro" and have them wear afro wigs to the performances? He is too funny. His sense of humor does remind me of John Mayer (his myspace is hysterically funny). I'm interested in hearing more of his voice.

It just started sleeting and snowing! This is one jacked up winter!

On topic:

I love Chris Sligh! Lee- The Fro Patro?!! I'm dying here!! I want to be a charter member. Fro Patro! Fro Patro! Woo!

I just spent 20 minutes on that SM fansite thingy. I was mesmerized by those pictures. I think they could be considered great art if they were hung in an art gallery...something about the juxtaposition of glaring consumerism and hair-covered humility. Just weird.

Dr. Bob- you must find that audition and watch it!!

I liked his music on his myspace page. I thought it was really good. But what do I know?

Well, I think it's official that most SP'ers like Chris Sligh. I found some good entries on his blog and posted them on my blog this morning. Here's a bit of it:

Chris Sligh on the American Idol image:

“As a singer, I am not what one thinks of as a great singer. I have a good voice and I have even better tone; but my voice is not overly-different, nor is it overly-elastic…I just sing and hit every pitch I come on in key and can stay on note. As a solo artist and now with my band, I get comments constantly on how refreshing it is to hear someone who can actually sing. I mean, I’ve won national awards for both singing and songwriting, so why the freak am I not a major label artist? I have come to realize the answer is….IMAGE!!!

Also, I heard the funniest thing this morning. Meredith Viera was interviewing Kat McPhee and she made very unwise comments about Chris and about Taylor. Too bad, because she has talent and needs to grow up. I posted it at MJ's blog, but I'll post it here too:
Meredith V. had asked Kat for her opinion of Chris Sligh, showed the clip from last night and asked Kat if he has what it takes to go all the way. This is the actual conversation…

Meredith: You’re cringing! See, I think he’s good! No?

Kat: Umm, I don’t think he’ll…I don’t want to be mean…(stumbles around for words.) I don’t think he’ll probably win, but he’ll probably…The thing about American Idol is they like to get behind somebody that they don’t think will win. You know, it’s like…he’s got the style going, he’s got the cool jacket, the goofy hair, the goofy glasses. Maybe people will get behind that, you know.

Meredith: I remember with Taylor Hicks, they said he looks too old. And Ruben was too big.

Kat: Exactly! Sometimes it works to your advantage.

Bama -- I keep looking on YouTube for the audition -- it will hopefully be up soon. And to think that I once lived happily without it and now I am impatiently tapping my toes, waiting for an AI audition clip. Now that is weird. Oh, and the banners are a little weird. But I am not a bannah-hatah. Not at all. It's all about the lurve here. I prolly have photoshopping envy.

I pretty much hate the banners. I think they are tacky and junk everything up! I like a nice, clean environment such as what we have here!

Theresa- I had heard something about what Kat said this morning. What an idiot. Sounds a tad bitter to me....or maybe a tad prideful. (She didn't win because she was too pretty, too talented, too good after all. Yeah, that makes sense.

What, Chris Sligh not pretty? Did you hear him say when he looks in the mirror he sees Christina Aguilerra (spelling?) I don't care who you are, as DD says, that is funny!

I think he's pretty cute. But my taste in boyz is as eclectic as my taste in muzic.

leejolem - I liked Simon last night too! He was hilarious. And no hating on Taylor last night, so that was cool. Plus, I loved the montage of Thank You's instead of the same old thing of everyone singing the same song poorly.

Loved Chris Sligh, I was so pleasantly surprised with his voice. Loved the bit about worrying now that he does sound like crap.

Jen-I thought Simon was more pleasant than usual too. I think he was stunned by the graciousness and hospitality of the B'Hamers and couldn't bring himself to be too mean.

I thought Paula was a little out of it!

The man said he wanted to make Hasslehoff cry! and he can sing? SIGN ME UP Fro Patro, FRO PATRO!

I have an issue with the glitter banners but I think my aversion to glitter runs much deeper than AI fandomness. I believe it may stem from a childhood "elmers glue" thingy...Mind Doc HELP

PS- KD...you and mini KD keep healthy and safe!

Here's some more Chris Sligh stuff from MJ's postings...

"Hey Chris, expect a huge amount of support from last year’s American Idol listeners who have come to expect good singers singing REAL music. The Fro Patrol will mushroom overnight if you have done as well as it is rumored.

Chris Sligh has auditioned several times before, but timing and image got in his way. I found his blog and read it with great interest…

Chris Sligh on his many attempts to make American Idol:

Orlando, 2004:

2 years ago, I drove all night down to Orlando, where I tried out for American Idol the first time. I got in line, waited, then found out I had to wait for another line the next day. SUCK!!! I got no sleep one night and then got 4 hours the next night and chose an N*Sync song…bad idea. I sucked pretty bad. But I did learn a little about the show…namely get sleep before trying to sing. Also, I learned that the show is NOT looking for the best singers…

Chicago, 2005:

Last year, my wife and I decided to make AI a vacation. We drove up a couple of days before hand to Chicago, got a hotel, relaxed, hung out with some friends up there and showed up when I had to show up and that was it. I still didn’t get a ton of sleep, but hey I was okay. The problem this year was that the weather had said it would be sunny and 85 degrees. It ended up being rainy and 70 degrees, and we were in Soldier Field the windiest venue possible and it was freaking freezing. By the time I sang, I felt like an icycle, plus I started my song too high and cracked on the highest note. SUCK!!! I drove home defeated once again.

Memphis, 2006:

Nigel looked at me, looked down and then went into it: “Well, Chris, you don’t have a bad voice at all…in fact, you might have one of the best voices I’ve heard today…but your performace just…isn’t there. You have to get out of yourself and use your space. It just wasn’t good enough.” If he hadn’t been right, I would have argued, but he was actually right. So I walked out defeated.

Birmingham, 2006:

As I walked in, Nigel looked at me and said, “Haven’t we seen you before? You’re going to fall down and your glasses and wig fall off?”

“Um, no, my hair’s real,” I said, pulling on it to demonstrate its veracity. “I did sing for you in Memphis though, and I had a question about that. I sang ‘Kiss from a Rose’ before and I’d really like to sing it again.” “I didn’t put you through with that song did I?”, said Nigel.

“Well, actually you acted like you liked that song, but I sucked up the Elvis song pretty bad. Remember, I had my words written on my hand and you had me hold my hand up to the camera?” He smiled and leaned back with a contented look on his face, “Ah, yes, now I remember. I guess you can sing the song again, but it’d better be good.”

I gathered myself and started singing and got through the first verse and chorus. I started the song very low and it definitely hampered my ability to wail on some of the higher notes, but I just tried to hit every note well. It seemed like he enjoyed but he asked for a 2nd song. I chose “Trouble” again and I nailed it. I mean really. By the 2nd line of the chorus, I saw it in his face that I was going through to the next round. I finished and he waved his hand. “Well, that was nice wasn’t it…get your ticket.”

FRO PATRO! While he's my favorite, I'm underwhelmed by this year's "talent".

Also, sorry Shelley, but Kat McPhee is EVIL. I despise her. There. now. I said it. I feel better.

Shrew, I'm ok w/elmer's glue, but I shudder when I see a jar of rubber cement. Too many memories of art projects gone bad. Help us dr bob/mind doc!

Sorry, Shrew, can't help with the glue-thingy. I have serious Arts and Crafts Issues. Every once in a while I have to help out in the Rehab room and I seriously suck. It gives the patients a good laugh and I get mocked, but hey! A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.

I remember the girl in kindergarten who ate paste. Her name was Nicole and I found her compelling. I would casually drift over to where she was, snub-nosed scissors in hand, and covertly watch her to see what else she would ingest. I never got the courage to try the paste, though. I think I wanted to ...

I love this guy!!! He is tottally funny, and he really can sing, I am gonna be watching this guy, ya know I was thinking before he sang he could do stand up, then he sang and I was like :O ohhh hes not just a funny guy. I thought last nights ai was better then usual cause they werent as mean and I loved when simon was telling that one girl to call him LOL he was very playful last night.

MindDoc/Bob...you hit on it! Are we all secret paste eaters? Is that what makes us like those who others would percieve to have image issues

And is that what makes us to "glitter resistant"?

I used to eat paste as a child. I also ate paper, pencils, crayons, dirt, dog and cat food...

I, apparently, had issues.

Lets make a giant glittery fansite for Chris. Wanna?

Glitter = Ewww. Glitter Banners= Double Ewww.

I agree that Pauler was acting crazy again last night. And I just KNEW there would be a Taylor dig from Simon since they were in B'ham ... but no, he actually kept his mouth shut. (that we saw..)

I like the Chris Sligh guy too, but really don't like that song. Really looking forward to hearing him sing something else! Very interesting read, DD, about his past audition attempts...

Oh, for pity's sake! Where is the audition clip? This is maddening. How is it that I have finally found the one thing that is not available on YouTube. Stoooopid Tivo.

I only saw the little snippet where Chris says that he hoped to make Hasselhoff cry, and that made me laugh. I was actually interested in seeing him.

sigh.

Ru, I have to say Simon had me laughing when he did the phone up to his ear to the last contestant saying "call me, you know you want to". He can be charming when he wants to be. Maybe he was in a better mood cuz Pauler wasn't there.
Bama, you go w/the glittery fansite for Chris. That will be kewl!!! Lots of glitter, fros, and pics of the Hoff shedding a tear.

Doesn't Chris Sligh have wonderful big hair? (He reminds me of my little bro when he was younger.) The curls had half sold me before I heard him sing. Tom Baker of Dr Who fame had such curls, but now he rests under Claire's patio....

Go Chris and go Sean. Yaay!

Yeah. That was kind of a jarring end to the show. It did not match the character as written throughout the episode. Hugh Laurie can do more with a gleam of humor than most actors can do with an emotional meltdown.
