Oh No, He Didn't!

After making it into the Top 24 (despite mistaking yelling for singing)...Sundance Head...very ungraciously...told Thomas Daniels, his losing opponent, "If I do make it big, dude, I'll make you my bodyguard. You're pretty big."

Um...me no likey Sundancey. Me wanty him to go home.

I refuse to focus anymore effot on Sundance (from here on out...I plan to write his name this way) when there are 23 other hopefuls now in the Top 24.

What did y'all think of everyone selected?

I was happy with all the guys...and I gleaned a new appreciation for a couple of the girls (though I thought the girl who went head to head with Antonella in the room with the judges deserved to stay...she was very Susan Tedeschi-ish).

Here's the breakdown (don't kill me for messing up the spelling of some of the names)...I've marked my favs *.

Boys
Sundance Head
Phil Stacey
Jarod Cotter
Chris Richardson **
Nick Pedro *
Brandon Rogers
Rudy Cardenas *
AJ Tabaldo
Paul Kim
Chris Sligh ***
Blake Lewis **
Sanjaya Malakar *

Girls

Antonella Barba
Haley Scarnato
Lakisha Jones ***
Jordin Sparks
Stephanie Edwards
Melinda Doolittle **
Alaina Alexander
Gina Glocksen
Amy Krebs **
Leslie Hunt
Sabrina Sloan *
Nicole Tranquillo

Alright...let's hear what y'all have to say.

Here's the contestant page on AI site.

And for those interested...here is the write-up from Entertainment Weekly.

This quote from EW's Michael Slezak cracked me up...

"Let's make this quick. Antonella Barba, you forgot the words on your final rendition of ''Until You Come Back to Me,'' and you hang with skanks."

And Slezak sums up my feelings on Tami and Sean perfectly...

"And finally, in the most genuine, unironic way possible, I'd like to dedicate tonight's column to Tami Gosnell, Ebony Jointer, Jenry Bejarano, Rachel Zevita, and Sean Michel, five folks whose voices captured our hearts during the audition rounds but who, inexplicably, never got the chance to sing on air again. I bet the semifinals would've been a lot more interesting (and competitive) had you made it, but lest you lose hope, there's always season 7."

**YAWN**

I am bored. Still. I'll give it one or two more weeks in case someone is "hiding", but I must say I'm underwhelmed.

me, too.

though i still really like chris.

geesh...i was more excited for the peripheral players last year than i am for the whole lot of these folks.

what gives?

I am totally unimpressed too. Chris Sligh and Lakisha are the only 2 that really stick out for me ... or who I would really root for.

Sundance making it through after that horrible Hollywood week pissed me off!! But ... since the show is so manipulated, it's not like it surprises me!

If he keeps sucking it up, maybe VFTW will pick him. Funny, but not funny ... cuz then we'd have to see him more, much like Scott Savol back in the day. Ewww.

I wasn't feeling Rudy or Nicholas Pedro at all. I like the bald guy who missed his daughter's birth a lot (Phil Stacy, I believe).

Elana Alexander ... I loved her in her audition (she was the one who said if this didn't work out, she was giving up on the singing career and going back to college). But she SUCKED in Hollywood week from what they showed.

Like I said ... underwhelmed!

Mmmkay, Sundance has let me down, but for now I will chalk it up to editing. Much more and I won't be looking forward to him redeeming himself.

Guys I Like: Phil Stacey, Nick Pedro, Brandon Rogers (I think, haha), Chris Sligh!, Blake Lewis, Sanjaya Malakar

Girls I Like: Lakisha Jones, Jordin Sparks (she's so cute)...wow, that's about it right now. That's sad, haha.

OK, I havent seen Hollywood Week yet over here, but....no Tami?? What went down?

Claire...I was a bit shocked about Tami...but I can understand it. After listening to her original materials on her website...her voice does get a bit grating.

What got her eliminated, Shell? Did she mess up lyrics/go out of tune/crack under the pressure? I probably would have followed her progress. I liked her look, kinda anti-Idol. Sort of like someone else we know of :) Never mind, she got some exposure from it...15 minutes, or thereabouts ;) ....

Claire...they never showed her again...until her cut.

So, I guess, we'll never know.

Lakisha and Melinda are the only ladies who stand out for me so far, and Chris & Blake are the only guys. It's really next week when we get to see what they are made of. So far, all we have really gotten is snippets.

I remember last year watching the first top 24 show and really hearing and noticing people for the first time. At that time, only "that gray haired dude" and "that heavy set girl that Simon made fun of" were the only ones I really remembered from the auditions and Hollywood week.

Awwww, now I am getting all sentimental thinking back to Levon and Taking It To The Streets. That gray haired dude can really sing!
:-)

Jenfera - I know what you mean! It's almost annoying how much I keep thinking about where things were LAST year with Idol and comparing it to this year! But it's like I can't help it - Gahhh!!!

Thanks for the EW link, Shell. Always enjoy those,

Well, I'm totally excited by this season. Until last year, I never really cared too much who won...I just enjoyed the show. Last year I had my eyeballs on Taylor and Chris. For me, things have always heated up after the Top 12 are chosen.

This year my eyeballs are on Chris Sligh, Blake Lewis and Lakeesha.

As much as I love Taylor...he has not "ruined" this show for me...He is not the bar that I set to judge all former and future Idols or any other artists. He is who he is and I just enjoy him as an individual.

This world is too big and the opportunity for new experiences too sweet to ever be jaded by something I've already done, or someone I've already known.

(I'm stepping down from the podium now...)

And Sundance disappointed me too...

I am pretty much back at pre-Taylor-AI-interest level. I don't really start even knowing folks' names until a couple of weeks from now. I like Chris, but really, it is not all that interesting yet.

At 2/15/2007 09:19:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bama -- did you take your meds today?

Who said they're jaded and that Taylor "ruined" anything? If anything is underwhelming or ruined it's because AI sucks, not because of Taylor or Chris or Season 5. It sure seems to me that the shows have just been "thrown" together and not much "storyline", at all.

I think folks were just comparing now to last year and realizing that no-one is really standing out. Last year, I was watching Mandisa, Paris, Lisa, Chris, Taylor (mostly 'cuz he was from Alabama at that point), Sway, and Patrick (yes, I liked him). So I had 7 that I thought were very good and would be interesting.

At this point, only Chris, Blake, Lakeesha, and maybe Alaina hold any interest. There doesn't seem to be any "golden", perfect one, so maybe that's what they're after this year.

While I like Chris, I don't think he'll go all the way. Top 5 highly possible, though. Again, I think it's a girl this year. I did find it interesting that Simon set up Chris by saying, "You're not the best singer, but every body seems to like you. You have a good personality." Sounds like they're setting him up to be the Season 6 "Taylor".

Lastly, I leave you with something to ruminate on. Michael Jackson has asked Simon Fuller to assist him in re-establishing his career. There are rumors that AI will have a Michael Jackson theme week, complete with Michael mentoring "the kids".

Thoughts?

Hopefully, Paul Kim goes first.

Can someone refresh my memory, now that they get to compete on TV how do they get cut down from here? Do the judges do it or do we do it? And is it possible that the top 12 might be heavy on the guys over the girls? More of the guys have caught my attention than the girls so far.

Kimmykins - we get to start voting next week. I don't think it was always that way. I didn't watch all the time during seasons one and two, but by season 3 they started voting during the top 24, but there were also wildcards. Each judge got to hand pick one contestant to go to the final 12. I believe they stopped that part during season four.

While Michael Jackson himself might be a bit scary, he does have a hell of a library of good songs, and it could actually work out to a good week of performances if it happens.

Bama, I don't think Taylor has ruined AI for me, although at the very beginning of the season I thought maybe he did! But I am right back where I usually am at this time, very excited to see these people start performing fo' realzies.

At 2/15/2007 09:54:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Michael Jackson mentoring ANYone is a scary thought. It would make for some entertaining TV though, no doubt.

Bama - I also wanted to clarify that I wasn't saying that Taylor "ruined" Idol for me. Because I was so wrapped up in Idol last year (and at that point in my life was seriously needing that focus), I seem to remember each week so well, unlike when I watched it in previous years. So I find myself thinking of all the kids that were in it at this point last year, not just about Taylor. Like even that crazy Brenna girl and that awkward tall Ayla girl, etc. That's what I meant.

All I know is that Chris Sligh is amazing...I mean no Taylor Hicks, but he is still amazing. Also, I am so not impressed with the girls this year...they're kinda boring sorry to say...

Interesting, Chris lists Blake, Rudy, and Gina as some of his favorite pop artists on his AI profile.

I think maybe they were sitting next to each other as they were filling these out because there are similarities regarding joking about their lucky charms, peeing before going on stage, mentioning each other as their American Idol etc. That's kinda cute I like that they are buddies.

Thanks for the video Shell!

Ahaha, Phil Stacey's write up is very funny, if he improves vocally he will be a big favorite of mine.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I had a car stolen from me at gun point when I was in high school. But it was very nice of the guy not to shoot me, so I'm not entirely bitter.

If you don't make it on American Idol, what will you do?

I don't even know -- probably just curl up in a big ball and cry myself to sleep.

Hahahaha...

(I posted this on the congrats thread, but am reposting it here since people are more likely to see it here. And all I have to say about AI right now is---I'm voting for Taylor again...what's his number?)

Hello to all my Monkbot friends!! :)
still*sighing*with*relief*three*days*later*
Thanks Shelley for the congratulations thread, and thanks to all of you for your sweet thoughts! Baby Alexander (yes he has a name and everything!!) arrived after Pitocin induction, five hours total labor and four minutes of pushing----I have MUCH to be grateful for! We came home yesterday in the middle of a blizzard (the only snow storm yet this year) and are already adjusting to our new family member. He is a sweet, sweet baby, and we are feeling very blessed. Thanks to all who sent prayers our way over the past two months. They were obviously heard and answered. XO
KD

Yay for KD and tiny baby Alexander!! I could have sworn you were going to name him Taylor Hicks. I guess not....

DD- I'll ask for a "TwoFer" deal from the doc and send you half my RX stash...how you like dem apples?

1st off--congrats to KD, new baby Alexander and family!! I too had 2 pitocin-induced babies. I had to push for 30 minutes though for the 10lb 2oz bowling ball head though (the lovely Alexa, aka, HC4S).

I have been stuck in INdy blizzard hell and stressing cuz I couldn't get into work yesterday, and we had to close the pharmacy, so this is the 1st minute I've had to read or comment. The 4 guys who sang How Deep is Your Love rawked!!!!! I especially love Chris Sligh. I'm not sure about Blake Lewis cuz I don't know if I've actually heard him sing much. I thought Chris sang Have You Ever Loved a Woman beeyootifully!!!!!!! I love that corny song. My other fav is Sanjaya just because his voice is sweet and he seems innocent and adorable. I'm not sure how he'll do singing all different types of songs--we'll have to wait and see. Other than Lakisha and Melinda Doolittle the girls kind of blend toghether. I'm not even sure I've seen all of them sing. Gina Glockson is interesting, and Amy Krebs has a different sound, but the others--eehh.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents. I think Hollywood should have been spread out over 2 weeks as in the past, but TPTB over at AI didn't call me this year for my advice. LOL

"I could have sworn you were going to name him Taylor Hicks" Bama, that was freaking hysterical!!! I might just have to get pregnant and have a surprise 3rd child just to do that. Taylor Reuben Hicks Hurt--love it!

Congratulations again, KD! Baby Alexander. Great name. :)

I just about got caught up with all the comments I missed. I must say, that thread on chocolate was sooo not good for me so close to dessert time. Yes, I love chocolate. Sadly, chocolate does not love me. I am allergic to it. Sigh.

The only contestants I remember are Chris Sligh, Sanjaya, and Melinda Doolittle. Maybe I'll know a few more by next week. But otherwise, pretty blehh for me, much like all the other AI seasons. Then again, I never really got into these thing, last year being the exception, of course.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm more interested in where TM is right now. Hmmm?

At 2/15/2007 02:55:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I suspect TM is packing his boots or "shoots" and shiny suit coat for THE BIG EASY. He'd better bring some gloves and a hat because it's freakin' freezing on the Gulf Coast.

NOLA -- You might want to be checking out the LAX flights arriving at Armstrong...jus' sayin'.

Okay...I am still into AI. Good drivle it is.

For men so far Chris has been the stand out along with Sanjay. I love those guys for very different reasons...

Now for the women...I have been knocked out by LaKisha Jones...This lady is amazing! I think she will be a force to be reckoned with.

BTW, Taylor DEBUTS today on the BillBoard A/C chart at #30 with Just to Feel That Way.

Doesn't TM seem awfully thin? How much weight do y'all think he's lost?

Sundace Head**

PKDH, I did think the eliminated guy was obnoxious (he flipped 2 birds at the camera in the elevator), and I think Sunflower Head (as Ivory called him , I think) was not sure what to say to him, so he made a stupid comment to break the tension. I still don't like his singing though.

Patrickdiddlydoo- I'm glad someone else agrees with me on Antonella. I don't think I'd give her quite as many stars as you, although, I might be more apt to give her more stars if I were a teenage boy...but I definitely think the girl can sing!! I also think she's getting a bad rep for having a mean best friend.

bamaborntxbred...... you make an excellent point about the teenage boy thing!!! If I closed my eyes and heard her, this is what I'd really give her.

FWIW, Matt Sato is my husband's student and he said the Jason (Sundance) was an absolute jerk to him. I think that says something about him that he'd be mean to a 16 year old boy. For what purpose? Still, he's got amazing pipes.
