Bambi...Flicka...Why Do You Hurt Me So?
When I was about 7, my dad took me to the Saenger Theatre in Biloxi to see "Bambi."
I remember being there with him...walking through the plush lobby of the old theatre and into the grand hall with its gilded, ornate stage.
But mostly I remember being devastated by the sadness of the film. Even Dad...all these years later...recalls clearly that I cried and cried and cried.
I've never watched "Bambi" again.
As a matter of fact, I'm reluctant even today to watch any sad movie...or movie with a strong element of sadness.
"Bambi" pretty much ruined me.
So, when my friend, Jon, called me this Saturday to see if I wanted to catch the Sunday matinee of "Flicka," I hesitated.
"Don't you want to embrace the 12-year-old little girl inside you?" Jon asked.
I laughed quietly to myself. As much I know that Jon loves connecting with the 12-year-old girl inside himself (he's a huge fan of Hello Kitty AND Hillary Duff)...I didn't want to burst his bubble and explain that very few women ever want to revisit those awkward 'tween years.
"Um..." I stammered, "I'll go...but only to spend time with you...not to see 'Flicka.'"
"I think you'll like it," he said.
"I doubt it...I hate Maria Bello...and I'm not a 'horse movie' fan."
"Well, I'm going to pay your way then."
I perked up a little.
"Great."
The next day we met at the theatre, bought our snacks, and settled into our seats. I scanned the audience. Jon and I were definitely the geriatric members of the group...even compared to many of the parents.
I rolled my eyes as the lights dimmed and "Flicka" galloped onto the screen.
I have to admit...the movie was great.
Tim McGraw, who played the dad, was as wooden as a cigar Indian, but the cinematography was breathtaking, Maria Bello (the mother) was charming, and young Alison Lohman (Katy McLaughlin) shone. (I also highly recommend "Matchstick Men," another Lohman movie...and a great one at that.)
But it didn't take long before the inevitable happened..."Flicka" turned into "Bambi" and I was that 7-year-old crying mess of a girl again.
I knew the story would end happy...but I couldn't help myself.
I tried not to make eye contact with Jon (who was smirking like crazy in the next seat). When I finally did compose myself enough to look over, he smiled and whispered, "Do you like it?"
"I hate you."
He laughed. "You like it."
"I may like it...but I hate you."
He laughed again.
The movie was great. Y'all go see it.
But don't expect me to be first in line for the next sad sack movie that comes along...I just can't choose to go to them.
As you can tell...life in general gets me worked up enough. I don't need any help.

I will make sure to check out Flicka 2 weekends from now with my family. I will freely admit that I went to see "A Walk to Remember" with my 9 or 10 year old niece and she was touting Mandy Moore is in it... I said who is Mandy Moore? The Disney channel develops all these talented stars as musical performers and as tv personalities and role models and I am impressed. Mandy Moore, Hillary Duff, and Raven (sorry it's late and I can't remember her real name). A Walk to Remember is one of my favorite movies of all time. I watched it for the 5th time and did not cry. To have my niece tell me at 9ish, Aunt Jan, it is only a movie. It's not real. Sad. Crying during that movie is 50/50 for me. It's funny that Mandy Moore was a love interest on Entourage.
I made a CD for my niece and I love this song. It's "Only Hope" by Mandy Moore. It will be even better if you see the movie. Wow, I can't believe I feel comfortable admitting this to you guys.

See, I don't mind crying at movies...matter of fact, I think I cry at every one and every Hallmark commercial too.
Funny because I try to be very un-emotional as it pertains to problems, business and my own life, actually. But movies tend to trigger the release, particularly of sadness, for me.
My husband and son take odds before the movies starts as to how long before I cry...even if it's the Fantstic Four. I don't fight it anymore. I just make sure I have enough tissue.
Shelley???? Were you lurking in Chat at GC last night? Cos I said that I'd never seen Bambi cos I knew I'd cry my eyes out. (And I would.)
Last time I cried at the movies? Dead Man Walking. The last few minutes where Sean Penn is walking towards the Chamber and Susan Sarandon put her hand on his shoulder.....oy, I'm tearing up here. I was with two friends, and all three of us sat in the cinema after the credits rolled and just sobbed. Very moving. Sean Penn rocks.
Shelley ~ You touched a deeply buried nerve with me...
Add Ol' Yeller to that list, and I'm done.
Just cannot handle them...best to stay away!
Oh man, Bambi and Ol' Yeller. Just awful. I mean, why do they do that to us as kids?? Why, why??
You know what movie I really sobbed during? "I am Sam." Hooo boy that got to me good.
I don't cry in "real life" unless it's for other people. But movies...that's a whole 'nother story! I usually avoid movies I think will be sad, unless I believe they are very important, and I'm compelled to see them...such as Schindler's List.
I almost 100% refuse to see animal movies (even cartoons)...b/c it never fails...some poor critter always dies. I can't handle animal death...even when the "bad/enemy" animal dies, b/c I don't think animals can discern between good and evil...it's just in their nature to hunt, kill, etc.
I tear up a lot during movies (Dancing With Emmitt Smith), etc., but the last movie that caused me to cry so hard I couldn't breathe was End of The Spear. The scene where the missionaries were killed...and they had guns and could have used them and chose not too...Oh, Lord. I was beside myself. To be a person willing to give everything....
Shelley-
This is for you!
Who loves ya baby?
Totally random story, but I have to share it..
So Dwain was watching his nephew the other day, who is 3 years old. They were eating and Seth already had a pool of ketchup on his plate, but wanted more. Upon hearing "no, you already have enough ketchup," a tantrum ensued. Dwain said sternly, "Seth, HUSH!" Seth said, "But my husher's broken."
That's pretty cute Nola. Crazy kids!
Nola - too cute...
We sure seem quiet today. Used to be we could talk all day about next to nothing. Now it seems we all only come out to play when there is controversy brewing. Do you think we are becoming like that? Or are we just catching up on work?
Well bama, I happen to be off work today and it's spilling with rain here, so I'm just hanging out on the Net - y'know, instead of doing my laundry/cleaning my bathroom/catching up with other housework.
But you're right, it is quiet today. Maybe we're all Taylored out after yesterdays Big Launch? Btw,where is our esteemed blogmeistress today?
Shelleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey!!!
I know I am more busy with work this week - it's starting our busy cycle of production. And last week there was some family stuff I had to deal with. So that's why I've been semi-MIA.
Have y'all been keeping up with the Dr. Burke controversy? It seems he gave an official "apology" (read: PR bullshit) today. Also I saw that McSteamy is with Rebecca Gayheart in real life and she was jokingly saying she was Mrs. McSteamy. Poor gal, huh?
Claire...post your birthday music link....that it KEWL...
I gots to work, y'all.
Besides, I need some humor, Bama.
What was Number One on the day you were born?
Mine was David Essex, "Gonna Make You A Star" (UK Chart)
Go nuts!!
Oooh, here is something random. So you know how I told y'all about the woman who said she peed standing up as part of the "Does that Make Me Crazy" segment on that radio show? Wellll, yesterday there was a woman who said she SPRAYS HER FEET WITH BLEACH before getting in the bathtub/shower because she doesn't want to get in there with dirty feet. My mouth is still wide open from that one.
Thanks for the link Claire!
Ok, bring on the "you're so young" jabs ...
Mine was "Physical" by Olivia Newton John.
And to think we were just talking about leg warmers recently ...
Nola, you are a teeny-tiny baby!!
Early eighties, right????
Oh, Pretty Woman - Roy Orbison...
My 18th Birthday....
Who Could it Be, Now? - Men at Work...ewww, now, but back then, I was all about Men at Work...and Rick Springfield....heh.
Yep, Claire. 1982. I'll be 25 in January. ;)
Oh, and I had to go back b/c I was curious what the song was for Dwain's b-day -- "Another One Bites the Dust." Heh.
Ah, 1982. I was 8 then. So I'm not quite ready to be put out to pasture yet. Still, I'd love to be 25 again. I'd have dressed better and waxed my eyebrows occasionally, LOL....
8?!?!? Geesh...I was 17 and engaged...for the first time...but THAT's a whole 'nuther story....
Why am I so old??????????
Cool, y'all! I left for lunch with 11 comments and now there are 23! Yay for us being able to talk about nothing!
My bday song is "Lean on Me" by Bill Withers. Nola is a teeny baby. If Holeigh was here she'd beat her, though!
I think Shelley is prolly catching up on a lot of work.
Nola- Where was Kidd and crew this morning? They never announced they were doing Best Of did they? I'm scared something bad might've happened...
DD - If it makes you feel any better, this "baby" this you are cooler than half the 25-year-olds I know. Smooches! ;)
Bama - Dude. I was wondering the same thing. No announcement, no "this is the best of" intros today. WTF??
Oops - meant to say this "baby" THINKS ...
k...I feel bettah.
DD- I think ur super cool too...but I'm 34. I hope that's okay!
Nola- I tried to post a message on Kidd's board this morning asking where everyone was and I hope there was nothing wrong....but I guess the "moderator" deemed it unfit...weird. I saw one message similar to mine...but it didn't say anything about being worried like mine did.
Okay...sorry, y'all.
I've been playing techno guru at the office getting computers set up with Skype and Go to Meeting.
Then we went to a birthday lunch for a person in the office.
---
Y'all had a pretty good little talk this morning.
Let me touch on somethings that really stood out to me...
A List of Movies Shelley Has Never and Will Never See:
Schindler's List
Ol' Yeller
Sophie's Choice
Dr. Zchivago
Saving Private Ryan
---
Official Prize of the Day goes to Bama for giving me that friggin' AWESOME link!
I really need to do a post on how much I want to be Cheryl Burke.
---
The number one song on the day Shelley Powers was born (2/26/70) was "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkle.
Hahahahahaha....fitting.
Aww, man! You got a good song!
I know, how cool was that link?! I want to be/know/have Cheryl Burke too. She has to be the coolest chick EVER!
Is it weird that I just said I want to have Cheryl Burke? I meant that in a pet-like sense, not a perverted way...although, that really sounds kinda weird too...
We missed you Shelley!
Look at Cheryl's cute lil freckles! Ahhh...she's adorable.
The number one song when I was born in the UK was "sugar sugar" by the Archies!!! (I did think about counting 21years back from now and lying through my teeth) but you know me too well......"you are my candy girlllllll and you got me wantin youuuuuuuuuu oooohhh"..everybody.."Sugar.. la la la la la la.ah, honey honey" oh and sad movie I saw when I was a kid was some strange thing called "Last snows of spring"!! Pathetic! the little snotty kid couldnt die quick enough for me (yea right..sniff)...Sal x
Shelley, Schindlers List is extremely moving, but I managed to hold it together until the end credits. Then I became The Blubbering Wreck Formerly Known As Claire. Sooooo moving.
Hmmm....I wonder if the credits are on Youtube....
Shelley- out your movie list, only Schindler's List is actually worth it. If I believed in pushing people into doing things that they really didn't want to do...I'd say see this movie. Just once. It is just such a testament to this man Schindler and really can put life into perspective...
Get yer hankies out....
The last 10 mins of Schindlers List. I'm bawling here.....really.
From about six minutes in, you get to see the surviving "Schindler Jews", with the actors who played them, at Oskar Schindlers grave. Just in case you're wondering who placed the rose on the grave at the end - it was Liam Neeson. Cuts off kinda sudden there...
I just think it's gut wrenching when he looks at those he's saved and he's crying and saying it wasn't enough...and his car could've bought ten more people their lives, and his ring could've bought two more people their lives...and he really felt that he hadn't done all that he could. What a man! Seriously...I value, looks and charisma and talent...when what he carried in his soul is what I should be valuing in other people....
I'm a horrible, shallow person...Someone give me a squishy muffin bunny...stat!
Hello! Count me as another one who's never seen "Bambi."
I do, however, remember watching "The Champ" as a kid and I couldn't stop crying in the end because I was imagining that I was Ricky Schroeder trying to wake his dad up (he just died). Too, too sad for a kid to watch with her dad.
Then I cried while watching "Land Before Time" when Longneck's mom died and he (she?) still kept looking for her everywhere. It was during a summer that I spent away from my mom (I was traveling with my grandma) and I missed her a lot.
So I guess that covers both parents. Let it not be said that I played favorites. Heh. (I was always the diplomat of the family ...)
On a lighter note...from 1964...that's right, 1964...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZFMv4wb0RE
And you guys think you've got problems....
Bama - one squishy muffin bunny, comin' up!! Ya want some baby ducks and fluffy marshmallow clouds with that, hun?
Yes, please, Claire! I really, really need 'em!
Y'all are killin' me...from "Sugar Sugar" to "Schindler's" in one fell swoop.
Sorry, guys, I can't watch the clip.
No...I can't.
Doooo it....come on Shelley...doooo it!
Bama...you sound like all my friends in 10th grade who wanted me to drink a beer.
ROFL.
I ain't watchin' no sad shit...not today.
I'm trying to remove the funk of Monkbot!!!!!
You know what's odd. I took an entire college course on the Holocaust, yet have never seen Schindler's List. I saw enough in that class to know that I don't need to see Schindler's List. Sad, sad stuff for sure.
But on a happier note ... today is HUMP DAY!!!
Shelley - if you're at work, don't watch it. Seriously. I keep forgetting the time difference thing....Maybe some other time.
For all you lovelies! ;)
Awwww!!!!!! Duckies!!!!
Omg! I wanna a baby duck so bad! (Except my Dad's baby ducks grew up and got eaten by coyotes and they left one of the duck heads and my Dad picked it up and said..."Oh, it was the boy duck...I recognize his face." And I could tell my Dad was kind of sad. He buried the duck head and the spine he found in the grass.)
Do you say coyote like ki-yote or ki-yote-ee?
Sorry...I dint mean to bring down the vibe. I know yer trying to unfunk us!
Jesus, Bama! Totally ruined the duck vibe, homie!
---
Shelley - 10th grade and beer? Pfft. Lightweight ...
;)
*is crying for Bama's Dad's headless baby ducks.*

My co-worker just sent me this. It is so random and so odd and SO FUNNY that I nearly peed my pants. (or maybe I just have a weird sense of humor)
Why won't those links work for me? If they're not hotlinks they just appear as text. No linkage to be found. Should I copy and paste?
NOLA...that was awesome.
Kick that funk! Kick that funk!
C'mon, Monkbots...kick...that...funk!
copy and paste then kick nola's ass for not making a proper hotlink.
(but then love her again for sharing the link.)
Link copied. Pants peed.
Mission accomplished!
I have to work in my mad hotlinkin skillz, this is true.
Now watch out, or I'm going to come steal your Internets.
As long as you're not down my couch stealing my change, that's ok with me....
So true, Claire, so true.
Oh, Shelley, I forgot to mention how much I nodded my head at your comment that none of us would like to go back to our 12-year-old selves. I like to call that time in my life my "Josie Grossy Years." If you have seen "Never Been Kissed" with Drew Barrymore, you will know *just* what I mean!
Those are some craaaazy kitties!!
I'm kicking my funky Monkbot! I mean, I'm a funky, kicking Monkbot...wait...no...I'm kicking the funk outta your Monkbot...still not right...What is it?? Oh yeah...I'm kickin' the funk...and I am a Monkbot! Huh?
I LOVE "Never Been Kissed."
It's where I first fell in love with Michael Vartan.
How can you go wrong with...
Drew Barrymore
Michael Vartan
Leelee Sobieski
Jessica Alba
Molly Shannon
David Arquette
AND
John C. Reilly
That movie kicks ASS!!!
Bama - Did Shrew leave you her Levaquin?
No more funkbot for the monkbot.
I LOVE that movie too. Man, do I love it. I didn't realize Jessica Alba was in it - is she one of the mean girls? I'm thinking so. Michael Vartan = Made me want to go back to high school so he could be my teacher.
Shelley, what's the link to Shrew's Paris blog? She put it up in Chat at GC last night but I didn't save it.
Yup...she was a meanie.
try this link to shrew's blog.
shrew's blog
Thanks Shelley.
What was with the funk today, btw?
funk from yesterday's discussion of taylor's website...and my funk in general over the last week. ;)
Yeah for the kitties!!!!
CATZ RULE!
DOGZ DROOL!
WOOOO!!!!
Get the funk outta ma face...
I knew you'd like the kitties, DD. ;)
Man, I just read Shrew's blog. WOW. I'm *jellis*
some oldies but sad--dies for you youngins!!! Spencer's Mountain, How Green is My Valley, Shenendoah, and the saddest of all The Yearling. Get a box of tissue ready for these!!!!! I could name a few more but Shell can attest to my crying when we would watch Aunt Bea, Opie and Sheriff Andy in the Andy Griffith show many decades ago. Everybody whistle:)
suzi-q -
I LERVE Spencer's Mountain...Henry Fonda was a hottie in that one! And, "Dan-o" from Hawaii 5-0 was the son....
I also LERVE Gary Cooper (another hottie)in Friendly Persuasion.
And don't start me on Cary Grant....the hawtest of hawt.
Ok, late to the party today. My number one song on the day I was born was "the Loco-Motion". (May 5th, 1973)
And bama.....ki-yotee. ;)
Shelley - I have seen all the films on your "No Go" list, and would probably not choose to see any of them again, so undrestand your viewpoint! I tend to buy films I've found powerful or moving, but then never feel in the right mood to watch them again, to have the emotions stirred up. One of these is one of my very favourite films, "The Day the Earth stood Still." Even though it is wonderful, the fatalism and sensitivity it reflects mean I just can't bring myself to face the emotional ride. The robot, Gort, is very scuuury too. "Clateau Varada Nicto" for anyone else who loves this truly fabulous film and can actually watch it.
Another film I cannot watch again is "Braveheart". Wept buckets in the cinema, along with many others, when the little girl gives the boy Wallace a thistle at his father's funeral. The symbolism, oh the symbolism...lol. There were times I'd watch it until I knew all his triumps were over, and would then switch-off the tape, as there was no hope of him avoiding the betrayal and very sticky end awaiting him. Sigh!
"Sister Act" is one film I love, as it makes me cry, but in a wonderfully cathartic, uplifting way. Sister Act is cleansing, and I love the cool old nuns with their edgy shoulder-shuffles.
Number One the day I was born..remember this one, it was "have I the Right" by the Honeycombs. I quite like it. Had I been born in the US, it would have been, "Where Did Our Love go?" by the Supremes. Great Link, Claire!
August, 1964...not today or yesterday...but it is a nice rounded cheerful number (consoles self.) The Sixties were groovy, for anyone who remembers them. Moon rockets launching, and staying up late to watch the return of the astronauts, wondering if they would be safe, wondering if their space-suits were full of wee... Great childhood memories!
I LOVE Sister Act! (I really love the old lady that plays the piano)
Braveheart is totally a gut wrencher, Rowan, that is so true. It didn't come to mind right away, but now that you bring it up...
NOLAgirl - Glad you love Sister Act. Yep, that old lady is the biz. Braveheart is way too much for me. Like your gut wrencher comment! Very apt...Poor old William Wallace. I think a quarter of him was sent to my city.
FREEEEEDOM! (Sorry, had to give him a wee shout out. Least I could do.)
LOL, freedom indeed! One of my brothers is that kind of person that has a knack for memorizing entire movies. Well, Braveheart is one of his favorites, so I used to hear it, accent and all, ALL the time. I think deep down he wanted to be as bad ass as William Wallace.
