17 out of 10,000...and not a single Taylor Hicks

I think my brother, Cooper, summed it up best when he called me last night after American Idols' premier.

"It's gonna be a long season, Shell."

True dat, little brotha.

True. Dat.

Shelley,

At least one of those 17 made it to the top 24 and he's my husband's student (high school). The young blond man who sang California Dreamin': Matt Sato. Watch for him mid-February. He's really talented.

He did do a good job. And he broke my heart when he cried after calling his mom.

Tkls2myhrt...Matt was the only one last night that made me say okay...now, he is unique.

I have never been a big fan of the audition rounds. The producers very rarely center in on the talent, but rather want to exploit the confussed.

Yeah! A kun-NECK-shun to cheer for. I haven't watched yet but my DVR "magically" recorded AI last night. I thought that I had forgotten to program it since we had bring mini-DD to a soccer clinic "across the bay". I bitched and moaned about it over dinner. Monklex says, "Can't one of your internet buddies tape it for you?"

"No, not the whole show on YouTube", I says. Anyway, it appears that the DVR is still set to record AI on a series recording. So, I'll watch tonight before Seattle auditions and I'll surely look for Matt.

Look at MonkLex using the MonkBot signal like that ...excellent!

Watching last night was torture!! Was it just me or did they show a lot more of the disillusioned and rejected than usual??? It was agonizing! I really would have like to hear a few more of the ones going on to Hollywood. UGH! I think Taylor has ruined me. Even the ones who got through (Matt being the exception) were "just singers"---nothing special....at all....I remember last year being impressed with a number of them that went on. I remember really liking Mandissa, Paris, Lisa, and Chris during the audition phase. Not to mention the fact that Taylor blew my mind in the first note. This year....nothin'! *sigh* Let's hope it gets better or I may just fall off the AI bandwagon. Very disappointing. Ah, well....I probably won't have time for much TV once Baby arrives anyway. Maybe it's all for the best! Love to all you Monkbots!! Thanks for letting me rant. :)

I agree, KD. It seems like they let some go on WAY too long. Case in point: The girl wearing a tie, trying to since Prince or Queen (can't remember) and forgetting the words every 3 seconds.

I must say that the most I laughed was the "American Idol and I are like, BFF!!" girl. THAT was funny. You know she's an Idol tour bus stalker, you just KNOW it!

Last point... Y'all know I am not one of those "They didn't treat Taylor right so let's e-mail and call them to complain" type of people, however, something last night had me going Wha???? So, you know how in the intro they went into saying Idol has produced a Grammy-winning Kelly Clarkson, Emmy-nominated Jennifer Hudson, Kellie Pickler's a household name, Daughtry blah blah blah, Mcphee is now America's Sweetheart (say what???) ...... and then nothing about Taylor! It stuck out to me so much b/c it seemed like they were "counting down" from out of the final 5 of last season, leading up to Taylor, but no, they just stopped at McPhee. It was odd. Was it just me?

Nola, I noticed it too. I wasn't even looking for something to be peeved about, and it was glaringly obvious to me. They couldn't have mentioned his cd going gold, or him being America's new hotty? Kat America's sweetheart--whatevah!!

I thought they focused on the bad auditions too much last night. they only showed like 5 people going thru and 17 actually made it. I like the girl near the beginning who was a "crack baby" and the girl who was in Reserves. She had a unique voice and a perky personality. Definitely no Taylors though. I thought Randy was kinda ruder than necessary too.

Nola!! YESYESYESYESYES!!! I wasn't going to say anything, but since you opened the door so helpfully! ;) They TOTALLY dissed Taylor in the opening, and it irked me to no end! They even highlighted Pickler! What was that about???? *deep*cleansing*breath* Okay...moving on. ;)

Nope NOLA I noticed that too! My feelings...Whatevah! They didn't get the Idol they wanted, but we did. I am wondering how the producers will skew everything so that there isn't another Taylor "upset" winner. This COULD explain why we are feeling so "mheh" about the whole thing.

Side Note: Idol BFF Girl...did you hear her say to Ryan see you soon? Or Good seeing you again? It was weird and business like...as if her business card reads "BFF Girl, Professional Super Fan~available for CD signings, bus arrivals, TV auditions and general stalkings"

I was okay with that minor Taylor dis because they started out the whole show with the clip of him winning! And really, until that damn single gets released, what else are they going to say? The winner sold almost as many copies as the 4th runner up? (Please don't bash me! Just trying to be reasonable.)

And I liked seeing him added into the opening sequence, and of course on the big pictures on the walls at the auditions. Although it was unfortunate the way they were centered we mostly only saw Carrie & Kelly!

Really, the auditions are always painful. There are many, many more to go. I think Minneapolis just didn't have much to offer and Seattle doesn't sound promising either. They are saving the better cities for later. While I am always amused a little by the auditions, I always do get sick of them, and I am always more excited when they move on to the Hollywood phase.

NOLA...I thought the same thing.

I was totally irritated when they DIDN'T mention him the line up of accomplishments.

And when they said Kat was America's new sweetheart...I wanted to wretch.

But the real kick in the pants was when the dork-O at the very end said he was Taylor's long-lost brother.

I really think last night's show was vile.

I felt bad for Jewel...'cause I don't think she knew what she was in for. Did you hear her say "You guys are so cold?" when they didn't take that girls' poster?

Well I think Taylor has ruined idol for me, I watched from the biggining of season 2 and loved the show but lastnight altho a few could sing, they did mostly show the bad ones and some they dragged on way too long. I hope it gets better but I knew going into this season that there will be no one like Taylor but hoped there would be a good competition any way, hopefully it gets better.

Seems the critics are calling it the same way

Shelley, My DH and older daughter thought that "dork-o" was funny, and they actually made me angray about it. I don't mind if people don't get Taylor or idolize him, but I can't stand him being ridiculed like he's a no-talent. Sorry, just had to vent! I am relieved that there weren't more Taylor dorky wannabes.

I know the judges put in long days, but they could at least be polite (like take the wizard of oz chick's poster--come on).
The judges just seem like they've become jaded or burnt out or something (or maybe its me).

Jenfera, you have a point, but what did they say significant about Kat? She's become "America's sweetheart"--no mention of her album or single. They could have shown a clip of TH at the AMA's on the red carpet when he looked so HAWT!! And no mention of Elliott at all--as if he's fallen off the face of the earth. Poor Elliott fans and Mrs. Yamin :(

Ok, back to work. Love you guys- you brighten my otherwise stress filled, dismal day!

leejolem - good point. I totally could not argue with a nice clip from the AMA's! He was breathtakingly HAWT then for sure! Or singing for the President at Christmas in Washington. Nice & prestigious.

Okay, okay, I take it all back! More love for Taylor on AI, dammit!

:-)

Jenfera - I thought the same thing at first, but like leejolem pointed out, it's not like Taylor has done nothing since winning Idol. So he's no Daughtry (thank God!) in terms of selling records (yet) but still. It was just weird how they stopped at Kat like that.

Anyway, Shrew, thanks for the link! The reviewer mentioned the left door being locked. I had forgotten to mention that. You KNOW they did that on purpose - but are they really that cruel?? Gah!

Ack. I missed the whole thing. -looks wildly around for MonkBot signal

I think I was busy reading the newest iPhone manual last night ...

Oh no, wait. That wasn't it. I remember now. I was outside in the freezing wind with a dim flashlight with a friend trying to figure out why my mom's car wouldn't start. (Incentive for me, since I let her take my car instead.) Checked distributor. Checked timing belt. Checked battery. Checked for spark (present). Checked fuel line. Checked fuel pump.

Also found out that, if you think your fingers get really cold standing in single-digit windchill weather, try fingers wet with gasoline quickly evaporating. Let me take that back. Don't try it.

It's still sitting outside and I'm hoping that my son's proposed solution works. He said: Send it love. Lots of love.

How does the saying go? "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"? Today's headline: BLOWOUT: FOX SCORES 21.8 RATING/31 SHARE FOR 'IDOL' OPENER; UP OVER 20.5/29 DEBUT IN 2006.

The show seemed to use the identical script from last year. Highlight the bad contestants. Focus on the ones going through to Hollywood who have interesting back stories (crack baby, military, woman working in non-traditional role in auto body shop). Simon being rude, Randy making faces, Paula appearing UI. The only variable is the contestants, so unless they come up with good ones, all the scripting and role-playing becomes too much of a focus and gets boring and repetitive. I wasn't overly impressed with any of them last night (sorry, Matt).

Ummmmm Platinum? Nice!

At 1/17/2007 03:57:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

YEAH for Platinum. Sorry guys but I don't think AI is smart enough to "diss" Taylor. I watched the show at lunch, admittedly FFing through to get it all in in an hour, but I don't think that they purposefully ignored Taylor.

His win was highlighted as the opener. He was featured in the "magic elevator" opening credits and they ended with his "long-lost brother" (FUGLY shirt and all). No doubt there will be many opportunities for Taylor references along the way so I don't think they can avoid him -- particularly in Birmingham.

As I said at Gray's, even if they do "diss" him, it won't hurt him one bit. Might even be a good thing. The dudes got serendipity on his side...I seriously think he's "bulletproof", but to quote the Brit, "What do I know?"

At 1/17/2007 04:38:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I didn't think that they were purposely "dissing" him. I just thought maybe they genuinely didn't think they could come up with anything interesting to say about him. If that was the case though, someone obviously hadn't been doing his/her homework. So I guess I don't really know what was going on - it was just so odd, that whole ending with McPee thing and then nothing. I expect to see references to him throughout, as well, DD, which I guess is why I thought there'd be more last night. No harm, no foul though - remember Taylor is ungrateful for Idol anyway right?? ;) (shall we call that the "Great Fizzling Fiasco"??)

Fizzle my shanizzle.

Sorry no real meaning...I just needed to say that.

NOLA...once again, I agree with you.

It just seemed pointed that they were NOT mentioning Taylor...especially after mentioning Kellie and Kat.

It was pretty glaring to me.

"shrewshanizzle"--bwahahahaha

I wish I had a cool name that worked w/shanizzle. Leejolemshanizzle just doesn't do it.

DD, I think you're right in that they didn't diss TH on purpose. I think they jsut don't think he grabs people's attention like McFevah, and it just annoys me. I shouldn't let it get under my skin. I think I'm suffering from TH/AI withdrawal and wishing his purty little platinum head would pop onto the screen every 5 minutes or so.

OMG!!! When I watched the show until the very end I was very relieved that there were no Taylor wannabees..........but then of course they showed this guy with gray hair going wooooo and saying I'm the next Taylor Hicks....I believe he's gonna be on the episode tonight....goody.....

Shelley, exactamundo! Even the non-Taylor fans noticed it in my household.

"goody"--do I note a bit of sarcasm HC4S?

At 1/17/2007 08:56:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I half watched the show and half worked on a report. I liked the kid who sang California dreaming. I am soooo grateful that no one was very interesting. I expect that AI is going to trot out the personal interest stories in an effort to pull me in. That was why Taylor was so compelling for me. There was no neatly packaged story to go along with him. He was a cipher. The most tear-jerking thing about him was that he had fish that might have been lonely.

No worries, though. I am up for AI -- I was hoping to see him on the wall next to the other winners. I remember last year, after he auditioned, I tried to visualize him next to the picture of Fantasia, and just could not do it. Yay for my lack of imagination...

(Ivory, I liked the iPhone manual)
