As Someone Who Has Played This Song a Gazillion Times...

This totally cracked me up. I dedicate this post to my brothers, Beau, Ben, and Coop...who have all played bass clef.

That...was hilarious! This coming from someone who doesn't have the patience to watch vids...but I watched this one raptly--it was great!

I remember talking to the group who was providing music for my wedding (a group of James's SCA friends) and saying, "There's this song I really, really like, I don't know its name, but it goes 'DA dadada, dadaDA, dadaDAdada...'" and the girl said immediately, "Yeah, Pachelbel's Canon. We know it."

I love it. But then, I never played cello. ;)

Shelley, thanks! That was really funny. As a past bass clarinet and baritone saxophone player, I can relate.

Back in the day (before there were CDs) the band used to have play the graduation song live during the ceremony.

Over and over and over and over.

The bass line for that has haunted me since high school. The part is really simple and not very interesting, and I learned that I could play it with absolutely no thought. My favorite part was that the trombone section would start to get a little loopy after about 20 minutes (trombone players are a bit loose anyway) and would start to add a jazzy dixieland sound. You could hear people descending into fugue states all around you. The more musical and clever people would start to make small changes in the music, just to amuse themselves and the rest of us.

Great video. He is right about taking home an oversized instrument. It does make you a target -- but it also provides a handy bench to sit on when you can go no further.

Shelley...that was hilarious! My favorite part was ".....and the second violins had a lovely melody....and that just shouldn't happen!"

i use to play second violin in the gulf coast symphony... :(

(i still laughed at that though)

Trust me...second violins get more than their fair share of crappy parts.

Try playing Marriage of Figaro...nothing by 32nd notes for a page and a half...the same run over and over and over!

Ha.

oh...and Mind Doc...I'll NEVER forget playing flute in the band at my junior homecoming.

we played some song (i think "The Rose" or "You are So Beautiful" or something schlocky like that) about 50 times in the rain while the popular girls walked out in their beautiful dresses...their escorts protecting them from the rain with umbrellas.

I've never in my life been more bitter.

Shelley...that could be a scene in a movie. I love it! You need to write a story with that scene as your motivation!

Okay...no one will believe me...but talk about one note...I played cymbals in High School Marching band. Stop laughing...I am serious. I joined cause I was dating the 1st trumpet...and wanted to go with him on all the trips. That relationship didn't last long...but hey! I got a varsity letter for it.

The hardest part...being the high hat cymbals for a snare drummer on Johnny B. Good. Dang were my arms tired after that little ditty.
