Monkbot Raises Three and a Half Antennas to "Taylor Hicks"

Creating an album is, in itself, a monumental task. But creating an album in a mere six weeks following a summer-long tour while trying to create a unique sound that pleases a fan base of thousands, meets the controlling restraints of producers and executives, and fulfills your own desires as an artist is unheard of.

But, despite all these conditions placed upon Taylor Hicks and his self-titled debut album, which landed on shelves this week, the 12 tracks (plus bonus) should be considered a success.

The Album
Largely, Hicks achieved what he set out to do...put together an interesting and entertaining album with an old-school feel and a contemporary pop sensibility. Certainly there are a couple of songs...“The Runaround” and “The Right Place”…that immediately take hold of the listener and beg the repeat mode be clicked on the ol’ iPod. The rest of the album, however, needs to breathe a little for deeper appreciation.

On a second listen...“Heaven Knows” and “Just to Feel That Way” become clear standouts along with the impressive “Runaround” and “Right Place.” And Hicks' remakes of his originals…“Soul Thing,” “The Deal,” and the bonus track “Hell of a Day”…are also a lot of fun and very well done.

That’s not to say there aren’t problems with this album…problems that might mean harsh words from media critics. Though Hicks’ vocals are solid throughout the entire album… some of the songs don’t offer quite enough opportunity for his distinct and quirky personality to shine through. Several songs rely on what comes across as preset synthesized percussion and keyboard...which definitely detracts from the organic quality of what Hicks offers. However, where real instruments are used, the results are truly captivating.

The album as a whole probably won’t capture any Grammys, and I’ll venture to guess that the critics at large will pan the work…if for no other reason than most critics are music elitists who would refuse to admit that Hicks set their toes a tappin’ with a few jewels on this album. However, the strength this album has is its potential to drawn more fans for Taylor Hicks. If folks outside of the Soul Patrol can move past the “squareness” so many seem to associate with Hicks from his stint on American Idol and open themselves up to at least listening to the album… few will be able to deny the appeal of more than a handful of these songs.

As for the aesthetics of the album art… the photographs are beautiful and, other than the slightly cheesy “diner” font used for the album title, the overall look is great. However, one major oversight is that there are no lyrics written in the liner notes. All albums featuring vocals should include lyrics. If the words are important enough to put to music…they are important enough to put on paper.

The Tracks
A long-standing guide I use in determining whether or not I will purchase an album is that, before I plunk down my hard-earned cash, an album must have at least three songs that I am drawn to. “Taylor Hicks” certainly meets my guidelines. But I didn’t know this until Tuesday, when I downloaded the album from iTunes. Up until that point, I had only heard “The Runaround” and, truth be told, absolutely loved it. I had made a point to not read track names and I also hadn’t read any reviews or thoughts on the album…so that my first listen would be pristine and without bias.

So, when I climbed in my car Tuesday morning after downloading the album and setting my iPod to play the album straight through…I was as wide-eyed as a newborn.

The album was bookended well…with “Runaround” jump-starting the list and “The Right Place” rounding things out…but I question some of the other song choices for this first album. “Give Me Tonight,” “Places I’ve Been,” and “The Maze” didn’t stand out as strong or particularly enjoyable, so their inclusion seems a little curious since at least one song (penned in collaboration with John Mayer) was left off the play list.

The Runaround *****
by Loren Goldberg and James Renald
It’s the driving force of the drum line that pumps this song along. Yes, “The Runaround” has a pop sensibility…but is far from the “pop” I’ve heard since the 1970s. This song has a very soulful backbeat and the punch of the horns breaths new life into an old style. I sang this in my car all the way to work Tuesday morning…sheer toe-tapping goodness. My only criticism would be that there is a shocking lack of harp.

Dream Myself Awake ***
by Rob Thomas
I didn’t dig “Dream Myself Awake” on the first listen, but the second listen was much better. I’m not a Rob Thomas fan…at all…but this song has some very nice qualities. With a beginning measure that brings “Midnight Train to Georgia” to mind, the song plods a little at the start but, once it picks up, is very enjoyable. I have to admit that Hicks’ drawl in this song brought out the fangirl out in me. (Oh, and I need to add that there is line in the song that Hicks delivers that is creasing my brain with familiarity. Does anyone hear something familiar when Hicks sings “I can’t get enough of you BAby”? It’s driving me crazy trying to place where I’ve heard that tune before…especially the “baby” part.)

Heaven Knows ****
by Cory Rooney, Makeba Riddick, Kara DioGuardi, Matt Serletic, Ray Charles, Warren Moore, Smokey Robinson, Robert Rogers, and Marvin Tarplin
Paying homage to Ray Charles, Hicks kicks this tune off with the familiar organ part to “What’d I Say” and the rest is just as fun. The layering in this song is brilliant…the creakin’ sax, the driving percussion, the gospel-like quality to the background vocals. There are a lot of nuances going on here…all groovin’ well together to create a great beat and a strong singability factor.

Gonna Move ***
by Paul Pena
This remake of the Paul Pena classic has a definite Robert Randolph feel…and though I appreciate Randolph’s talents…the repetition and heaviness of the bass line is way too structured for a song that's about ramblin’. There's too much of a push/pull between Hicks’ loose vocals and the music framework. It seems he’s trying to loosen it up…but he’s fighting the instruments…which are thumping out a steady beat. I tried hard to not compare it with Susan Tedeschi’s version and Hicks’ live version…but it was hard not to. Like “Dream Myself Awake,” this song does grow better on the second listen and I truly liked the playfulness of Hicks with the male background chorus. I just wish the song, on the whole, was more loose.

Wherever I Lay My Hat ***
by Marvin Gaye, Barrette Strong, and Norman Whitfield
I had never heard this song before…even though it’s a remake of a Marvin Gaye song. It has a definite “Forever Young” (Rod Stewart) feel and Hicks does a wonderful job with the vocals. I love how this song leaves his voice exposed…vulnerable…but I didn’t really enjoy the synthesized feel to the song. It comes off as a little over-produced.

Give Me Tonight *
by Matt Serletic, Kevin Kadish, Brandon Jane, Lea Crutchfield, Taylor Hicks, and Kara DioGuardi
This is going to be rough, folks, so hold on. I hate this song. From the electronic drumbeat to the unbelievably cheesy lyrics…this is not good. It’s like Lionel Richie trying to be a badass…just...yikes. Maybe my appreciation is stymied by the creepiness factor of a guy wanting a raunchy one-night stand with some hot chick he saw at a party…but I doubt it. I literally cringe when Hicks sings, “There was magic in the air…I was trying not to stare, but you caught me…you caught me COLD.” Geesh…for this we gave up a Mayer song? I was more than disappointed when I saw that Hicks co-wrote this. I’m just relieved some of his other original works (written on his own without collaboration) are on the album to show folks that “Give Me Tonight” is not solely indicative of what he is capable.

Just to Feel that Way ****
by Lindy Robbins, Jess Cates, and Emanuel Kiriakou
Now this song piqued my interest immediately. In it, Hicks sounds like he's stretching his singing chops…and it works beautifully. We may have lost the Mayer song on this album…but “Just to Feel that Way” has a Mayer vibe mixed with a little Marc Cohn. This is a beautiful song. It gets a little “big ballady” in parts, but overall it’s very nice…and very different from anything I’ve heard Hicks sing. I also enjoyed the sound of the strings (which may be synthesized…but they work). Well done.

The Maze **
by Anne Preven and Scott Cutler
I can’t get past the 1987 Casio keyboard sound at the beginning...sorry. Must…try…to move…past…this. Nothing about “The Maze” stood out to me….except the 1987 Casio keyboard sound at the beginning. Stripping this piece down to just a few instruments would have enhanced the overall mood of the song by allowing the vocals to emote instead of compete for attention. The song does grow stronger toward the end…still, wholly, it’s not a real keeper.

Places I’ve Been **
by Diane Warren
This song brings me to the same thoughts as I had for “The Maze”…less would be more. Ultimately, this is a bland piece that I’ve listened to now five or six times and still can’t recall.

Soul Thing ****
by Taylor Hicks
Now this is a great remix of a familiar song. If I was hearing this for first time…I’d be hooked. I love the original…but this one is fun and a nice change of pace, even if the guitar in the middle is a bit much. However, the breakdown after the guitar solo has a quirkiness factor that really drives it home.

The Deal ****
by Taylor Hicks
This is another great rerecord…even better than the original…by far. I not only love the organ in this piece…I like the sax solo (and, as most of y’all probably know by now…I generally don’t like sax solos). Plus, Hicks settles into this piece like he would into a well-worn pair of slippers. There’s a very comfortable and laid-back feeling surrounded by familiarity and warmth. I have a renewed sense of appreciation for "The Deal" now. Thank you, Mr. Hicks.

The Right Place *****
by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance (written for Ray Charles to record before his death)
If for no other reason than this song…everybody should be a card-carrying member of the Soul Patrol. I absolutely am in love with “The Right Place.” The producers got it right on this one…a pared down song that features great lyrics, great music, great vocals, and lots of emotion. I wish the entire album could be this lovely. Hicks practically channels Ray Charles as he caresses this piece. Not only is Hicks sexy and soulful, his whiskey tenor shows a range that wasn’t explored in the album's other songs. He teases his audience in just the right places and hits them between the eyes in just the right spots. Plus…how many women out there would love to hear Hicks calling them “angel”? Um…sign me up. This song is perfect for the end of the album (at least the versions without the bonus track) because it shows the potential that Hicks has to express without all the hoopla of studio mixing and layering….and it gives us a taste of the direction his sophomore album could be heading.

Hell of a Day (Bonus Track) ****
by Taylor Hicks
This is another solid Hicks original. The re-record…with the added brass…didn’t do anything but enhance an already fantastic piece of work. I like the faster tempo and the added bridge. Plus, I actually think these vocals are among his strongest of the previous versions of this song that I’ve heard.

Overall…a great album…and one I will enjoy for a long time.

Pretty good review, Shels. I do think that a few of the songs will move up on your LURVE-o-meter as time goes on. Two for me that are starting to get more "air time" are Places I've Been and The Maze.

I started out loving Runaround and The Right Place...then my favorites moved to Just to Feel That Way and Heaven Knows. Now, the other two. After some "settling", the only track that I haven't been able to "get into" is Give Me Tonight but I do love the "got my good shoes on" lyric.

On Dream Myself Awake, you are hearing ? & The Mysterians "Can't Get Enough of You Baby" more recently covered by Smashmouth. This song, too, is not unpleasant to listen to.

While I give it a solid 4, I am a wee bit concerned about where it "fits". If Taylor is measured by CDs sold, then going cross-genre is the ticket. If radio play is the measuring stick, not so much. Don't think format radio will pick up much of these. Most tracks actually fit best on today's Country. Anyway, this CD is destined to sell a FARILLION or so, so Taylor should be accepted in the Big Leagues.

I think it's his live shows that will make him a legend, however. That and a little wreath making with Martha Stewart.

G'day all.

DD...not Smashmouth. It's something from the late 70s...kind of a Gino Vanelli song...but I can't quite place it. (Trust me...I thought about it for most of the day yesterday.)

Can't wait to see Taylor on Martha!

Quick thoughts for now: Agreed on Give Me Tonight...I skip it every time, which sucks as I am still listening to the streams on VH1 (I'm on campus for finals and no car!) and everything has to reload and the order gets messed up when you do.

Just to Feel That Way = perfection, if VH1 had a repeat button it would be on all the time. Fits me so well right now, haha.

A lot of the songs you mentioned as mediocre definitely have grown on me. The Maze, Heaven Knows, etc. are really starting to catch my attention, along with the other two (Places I've Been/Wherever I Lay My Hat). I think it's just a matter of listening to them repeatedly because any concerns I had with the disk as a whole have faded...to be replaced with a hatred of Give Me Tonight, haha. As you said, thank God for Soul Thing & The Deal, which are very very good.

So happy to hear your thoughts, Shell! Good review...indeed. :)

Well...y'all know I will certainly be listening to the album over and over.

However, I was trying to also look at this from the perspective of someone who might only be a marginal Taylor fan...and not as dedicated to becoming familiar with these works.

Some folks...gasp...will only give the album one or two shots before making a judgement on it. And of those folks...I'm sure more than a handful will be critics.

Hey, anybody else hear "Thriller" in Give Me Tonight?

Listen to the intro...

..."Well, it's midnight...."

Holy crap, DD, I was thinking that about Give Me Tonight ALL the way home last night on my first and second listen! I was going to wait til Shelley posted her review and then add my two cents. Weird! For me, it's something about the beat that sounds Thriller-ish.

And I agree with y'all - I don't get what they were going for with that song at all.

That one and "Places I've Been" are the only two that I wanted to skip through on first listen (but didn't, just to give them a chance). "Places I've Been" is just so ... blah.

Funkity funk, don't funk me out. That's what this version of "Gonna Move" does to me. Love it.

Shelley, I too was BELTING out Runaround in the car this morning. It's so fun to sing along with!

I'm so glad you liked The Right Place - I just knew you would when I heard it. It's really a beautiful piece of work.

Oh, and I forgot to talk about "Dream Myself Awake"...

First of all, any song with Taylor saying "Do me any way(where?) you want tonight" is OK in my book. I'm just sayin'...

And also, I had a nice moment of recollection with the "Do me wrong, do me right" part -- James Taylor anyone?

Giddy...review up! Excellent as usual.

The Right Place is the breakout hit for me! This one is just so tight and solid. Mr. Adams I have new found respect for your song writting capabilities! I hope your prediction for the sophmore CD is true.

For the most part I find the cd solid...with some peaks and valleys. The Diane Warren song MUST have been a consession. I have never been a big fan of her song writing.

I honestly cannot fathom the theory of including "Give Me Tonight" but oh well.

"Dream Myself Awake" is worming it's way into my heart. I think come spring I will be digging it.

I will tell you this...6 weeks? What would a normal process yeild? Yes, I am happy to have this first CD and I heartily look forward to the tour, but I am ever so hopeful for the next CD that will be allowed to marinate longer in the studio!

Nolagirl, thank you so much--the "do me wrong, do me right" was driving me crazy. I knew I had heard it before and couldn't place it.

I too love!!!!!!!!!!! The Right Place, but Just to Feel That Way is a close 2nd. I agree w/Double D about radio play. I think JTFTW would fly on top 40 stations, but i'm not sure of any of the others. I really don't know if Runaround will be played a lot. I love it, but it does benefit from seeing the live performance. It doesn't really matter cuz DD is right--the live performances will make him a legend.
Everyone must have been stoned when they included Give Me Tonight. The 1st few lines sound just like an N*Sync song ("Friday night, just got paid"). I think the song is about as sexy as JT.(mouseketeers are not sexy, monkbots are)
Shelley, you did a great job on the review. Very fair and balanced considering 1st impulse is to give 5 antennae.

At 12/13/2006 10:34:00 AM, Blogger shelley said...

Leejolem…believe me, I couldn’t believe my rating was only 3.5 antennas. I did my math three times to make sure I had the right average (I had put a rating on each song as I listened…then went back and changed “Dream Myself Awake” from two to three antennas upon a second listen).

Also…we all need to be sensitive to our little Bamaborntxbred…a founding member of Monkbot…and a Timberlake fan. We’re all about the lurve here! ;)

Oh and radio play...see C&W here in the NYC area happens but it is not the big market...Adult Contemporary on the other hand has made legends of Ray Lamontange, Andrew Bird, Rufus Wainwright, Amos Lee and Mayer and Oh yeah...John Legend.

The AC market captures the college set...so I say that should be included in the targets!

lee: YES with the *NSYNC!! I was hoping someone else was a freak about them like I was back in the day and would notice that. Their take on "Just Got Paid" was exactly what I thought when I heard "Give Me Tonight". Not a big fan of Paid and really not a fan at all of Give Me Tonight. Oh well, the others are great, that's all that matters to me! :)

I am so glad to be able to talk about this stuff with you now, Shelley!

Ok...my order of preference:

1) The Right Place-the quintessential Taylor tune

2)Just To Feel That Way-love the sentiment behind this song

2)Gonna Move-took me a bit to get used to the new groove, but I LURVE it now

4) Wherever I Lay My Hat-love the auto-biographical aspect of this one, and I like that the vocals are really out front on this one.

5)Heaven Knows-I love the What'd I Say lick on this one....that is one of my favorite covers that Taylor does.

6) Like I said over at Gray's a few days ago, I wanted to hate this song, but it is very catchy in a pop kind of way

7) and 8) with a caveat- Soul Thing and The Deal. I am not sure where these will sit in the long term...I really haven't given them much attention in lieu of the new stuff. I think they are both well done. I have not been a fan of Soul Thing in the past, but with some production behind it it shines.

9) The Runaround-fun groovy "dance to it" song. This one has some cheesy lyrics I am not too keen on, it's too bad they didn't have more time to polish this one lyrically.

10) Places I've Been-this one is ok....not a fave.

11) Dream Myself Awake-YAWN.

12) Give Me Tonight-I dislike this one with the heat of a thousand suns. I think the worst part of it is the cheesy female background vocals. Do you guys know about Veggie Tales down there? These BG vocals remind me of something one would see on those videos.

13) Hell Of A Day-The only reason I am rating this one so low is because it was NOT ON THE WAL-MART CD IN CANADA! What a waste of a trip. If anyone wants to help a gal out and send me the MP3 I would be forever grateful. I don't think Taylor would mind, since I DID buy the CD.

I usually live and die by Entertainment Weekly’s reviews. I may not always totally agree with what they write…but they are pretty accurate or, at least, able to capture an good overall sense about what they review.

And, if EW gave Continuum a B- (and that album that I really find great) then I have to say I’m nervous about how “Taylor Hicks” will be graded.

–-

Squee…you TOTALLY called it on the Veggie Tales background singers. Now I won’t be able to listen to “Give me Tonight” without thinking of “The Bunny” song and a bunch of asparagus backup singers.

Shelley, thank goodness I am not the only one going crazy here trying to remember what old song that "Can't Get Enough Of You Baby" is from. Yes, late 70s or so song, and all I hear in my head is that one line. It's driving me nuts. Lucky for you that you waited this long to listen to it. I've been tortured by this for weeks now.

I hate when my internal music database isn't recognizing my queries.

Excellent review, as always. I think the groovy thing about listeners having different favorites is that it's a good indication that the album will appeal to a wide audience. Hope it gets new people into the seats for his tour, which is where I'm pretty sure he'll cement the deal.

Shelley...The Bunny Song was the one I was thinking about....glad I am not alone in seeing the similarities!

Yes, NOLA. I immediately thought of "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" by JT (the REAL one), as it's an all-time favorite of mine.

Shelley -- I'm thinking that EW will likely give Taylor a B or B-, much like we all have. I think that because of the diversity of the songs, the critics will rate it decently. So far, many of the reviews have been very positive. We'll see.

I can't do my review yet...but let me just throw this out into the universe....

I like "Give Me Tonight".

Of course, I also love JT...

Shelley and Ivoryhut...

Please go to iTunes and look up "Can't get enough of you baby"...it is by

? & the Mysterians. The ? is like the Prince Symbol. I think you'll recognize it as the refrain.

Uh, and Gino Venelli...what WERE we thinking?

ivoryhut...i'm wondering if would have a deeper appreciation and like for "Dream Myself Awake" if I could figure out what that damn song is!?!?!?!?!?!

seriously...it's the ONLY thing i focus on when i hear that song and i'm going absolutely CRAZY!

i have two people at work dazed over it as well.

and i e-mailed gray...who said HE heard the same thing...and would ask taylor about it. ha.

however...after all the wine and "amazing" food last night...and being on set at martha stewart today...i'm sure my little question about one line in a song will be looooong forgotten on gray's trip to N.Y.C.

DD...no...no...NO...that's NOT the song I'm talking about.

That is the one that Smashmouth remade.

I'm thinking of a BALLAD...a cheesy 70s ballad...possibly by solo male artist.

Someone in my office has suggested Chicago...but I don't think that's it. Close...but not it.

This is going to melt my brain...I just know it.

Shelley...you are gonna get me trying to think of the song you mean, and that will not be a pretty sight! I have had the same thought about that line...but the timing is a little different I think. I am off to find that song DD was talking about.

Nope, DD, that is not the song. It is too upbeat. Shelley is right...it is a cheesy ballad. Dangit, Shelley, now I won't get anything done!

not barry white, dd...you're thinking of stuff way too soulful and funky.

my brain is stuck in fart mode on this one, folks.

gah!

Shelley - re "I can't get enough of you baby" - a scene of Taylor recording that line in studio was used in an intervew snippet pretty recently,(last month or so) I can't remember which interview. One of those little snippety ones he did. Could you possibly be remembering the song from that interview??

Love you review, btw. Pretty similar to my own thoughts. Waitin' for my CD to plop through the letterbox soon....

good try, shrew...but not leo. more "big ballad"

claire...no...this is something that is connecting with a song from years past...i'm confident of that.

i just drove to get my lunch and sang "BA-by" over and over and over again until i'm horse.

Not hairband....big ballad on the same line as Air Supply or Geno Vanelli or even Leo Sayer.

Squee...I'm pretty sure it's not Chicago...but that's the right direction.

I WILL TRIUMPH!

For all you Veggie Tales fans--can't you see Taylor doing The Dance of the Cucumber or Song of the Cebu? (I confess I lurve VT!!!)
Taylor as Larry and GC as Bob the Tomato?

Okay, well, apparently no one noticed or cares that I like the most hated song on the cd...that's good...I was skeered to tell y'all!

The way I listen to music is in an emotionally responsive and/or experiential way. Not at all in an analytical way...which is why I probably like more music than I dislike. Because for me, all music (critically speaking:good and bad) has it's place in my life. It just depends on my mood and what I'm going through.

Unfortunately, I was not gifted with any musical talents. This is a tradgedy b/c I very much work through all of my emotions by listening to music. It would be more fulfilling to work it out by creating music, I think.

When I'm feelin' fine I love to just sit back and enjoy music w/o having to think about it. I just experience the way the music feels, how I move to it, etc.

All this brings me to my review. I have not "analyzed" this cd. I've listened to it 3-4 times. I haven't gotten into the lyrics or the "meanings" of the songs. (I will as I get to know it better...that just isn't where this review is coming from.)

I won't address every song on the cd b/c I don't have time. I'll start with the worst..and work my way up to my faves:

Places I've Been- (*) Wah? Huh? I'm sorry...I feel asleep for a second there. BORING. This is my "You gave up a Mayer for this?" song.

Gonna Move- (***) Started as one star. Moved to three b/c it took off after the harp mid-song. He really got groovin'.

Dream Myself Awake- (***) Nice to tap yer toes and sing along to. I wouldn't play this to convert anybody though.

Give Me Tonight- (***) Y'all are overthinking this one. This song is sooo fun!! Sure, it might be a little cheesy...but I cannot sit still when this comes on. I do a little boogie-oogie in my chair. It's such a feel good, shake yer booty song. I really like it. Funkaaay!

Heaven Knows- (****) This will be a great song to sing along with...as soon as I learn the lyrics. Easy on my earholes.

Runaround- (****1/2) Another boogie song. I'm freaking out my office mate b/c I've been scootin' around in my chair all day...singin' and wigglin' and all.

The Right Place- (****1/2) Niiiice. Really nice. I love this song. It doesn't get 5 stars though b/c two other songs make me feel squishier.

Wherever I Lay My Hat- (*****) Absolutely love this song. This is a song that makes me feel something. Can't really explain it...

Just To Feel That Way- (*****) Dude. I mean, just, dude. Love, love, love this song. I want to make out with this song, and take it home to meet my parents and tell our grandsongs about the first time I heard it. Duuuude.

Great review, Bama. Though I'd be hard-pressed to agree with you on "Give Me Tonight," I think you have some really great points on the other songs.

thanks for sharing!

squeebee...you may be right about "BA-by"...and here I thought I had it figured out.

Ok... Thanks to Taylor my house is now clean & shiney! Mr Jax brought the cd(s) home with him last night. I had only listened to 2 1/2 of the songs before I got the cd. I wanted to hear it ringing from the rafters on a good stereo.. YES my friends you could hear it out at the street lolol. The UPS guys came and had to FRAM on the door before I heard them.. lolol

Before I tell you what I thought let me say this... IF TPTB REALLY thought Taylor's fans are all middle aged women they would not have written everything in the credits in that gnat's-ass font.

I love this CD! I cleaned, polished mopped & shined this house & laughed & sang the entire time (me laughing while cleaning house is NOT the norm). I won't go song by song but wow wow wow.

When the cd was being made, all I wanted was to hear Taylor SING. I wanted to hear his voice ... he delivered my wish .. how wonderful. I sat down to listen to "The Right Place" .. sorry folks but I got tears in my eyes. I am so danged proud of this young man. What a beautiful sound.

When you listen to this CD, picture in you mind Talor singing the songs live ... Just like we KNEW "The Runaround" was going to be great live, this is going to be one heck of a concert.. Dance Taylor Dance ... When you get tired, Taylor, sit & sing those beautiful songs ..

A side note.. my daughter called while I was listening (I never heard it ring lol but it is also set on vibrate). She said.."MOM!" I was going to get that for you for Christmas!!!" Poor child, she really doesn't understand .. wait for 12 more days? paaaaaleeeze.. I didn't tell her that she's getting one in her stocking lolol.

Peace

How am I supposed to work under these conditions??

Sorry, had to get that out b/c I am FREAKING and trying to work instead of looking at my door and floor non-stop.

How could I freak out??? Ummm, cuz they scurry and stuff. I don't want one crawling on me! Ewwwwwww!!!

This older man who works here part-time is going to set traps after we leave tonight (apparently we are too cheap to get a real rodent guy), so there just might be some hurtin' on the little guy's part. I am clearly heartless, cuz that doesn't bother me at all.

ok I have watched Martha to see Taylor.. I am not really a fan but she was really really nice to him. Now? I am trying to sit thru TRL...please let him be on early... I can't handle Rap & girls in thongs pulled wayyyy up above their jeans..

Brings something to mind.... Taylor have a music video coming out?? hmmm???

He's prolly freaking out b/c he took a wrong turn coming home from work and got lost...now he's on your hit list. Poor little guy. Poor, poor Monkmouse.

OK so personnaly I would give Taylor 5 monkbot anntenaes (or however you spell it), but then again I would give Taylor a perfect score even if he sang a soulful version of hot cross buns. I just have one question-HOW CAN YOU HATE "GIVE ME TONIGHT" so much??? Taylor has a bad side to him...kinda sorta. And also I think people are having a trouble separating Taylor's songs with other ones-for heaven sakes people older songs are where Taylor gets his inspiration from.....

Bama - That ain't gonna work on me, hon! Nice try though. ;)

hickschick4soul - I am totally aware of and wish we could see more of Taylor's "bad" side, but for me, Give Me Tonight isn't it. Too cheesy to really be "bad" you know? That's just me, though!

Argh. The mystery song is driving me out of my mind. I remember thinking the same thing when I saw the clip before, so I know it's not deja vu from that. I'm thinking that maybe it's one of those one-hit wonders, which would explain why the name just won't pop out. Talk about brain constipation.

I tried googling the "can't get enough of you baby" line (excluding all the Smash Mouth and Kiss references), and saw an entry for "All Strung Out On You" by John Travolta (which satisfies the white cheesebutt requirement), but still don't know if that's it because I don't recognize any other lines from the song as something I'd have heard before. Squee, I'm wondering too if the original is something-something-something baby, and singing it with "can't get enough of you baby" is throwing me off.

This is the second time a Taylor song has done this to me. I'm still trying to remember what song it is that has a very similar intro as his "Son Of A Carpenter."

Sigh. I may have to use a lifeline and call an old friend of mine who's been a DJ since the 70s. Maybe he'll be able to help me. Of course, it'd save me an overseas call if only my synapses would get their act together.

LMAO, Bama! Your comments on Just to Feel That Way are exactly how I feel...The Right Place is probably more suitable to Taylor but Just... is so fantastic I can't stop listening to it. Fan-freaking-tabulous.

Holeigh, I keep skipping over the other tracks to get to JTFTW. Maybe if Bama divorces the song we can marry it (we'll have to move to Utah).

Shrew....BWAHAHAHA! "Hutch" sings...

BTW, guys. Taylor said that John Mayer had to go on tour in Australia, so he had to POSTPONE that song to the next CD. Robert Randolph too.

Have y'all seen the Martha segment?
KA-UTE! Martha is officially "Taylorized". I donned my sunglasses and I swear, I saw him whip out the MIB nuclear blast thingy and then Martha was all giggly, saying that she "might just need to keep him around"...me thinks Martha may have had too many lonely nights in the "Pen". heh.

At 12/13/2006 04:14:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Shrew...I am still not convinced. But you may be right! My brain hurts. Ivoryhut...do you have a spot beside you that you could save for me? You know, for rocking and muttering purposes?

DD....Martha was TOTALLY Taylorized. I bet her boyfriend loved that remark about wanting Taylor to stick around and do chores around the house.

And Taylor is incorporating a jump-rope dance move into his choreography for The Runaround. The boy is learning!

I can't wait to watch the Martha clip! I had told my mom about it and she happened to catch it and called me after lunch at work to tell him how cute he was -- she has been Taylorized as well. (wonder how that happened??) ;)

I am dying to see the Martha & Taylor show! I hope there's a clip up at GC later. Taylor Hicks... it's a good thing!!!!

I would love to see Taylor on Paula Dean's show (she's my cooking hero).

As much as I love David Soul, I don't think that's the song either. I'm going to stop thinking about it and hope for a "aha" moment later on this eveing.

Oh no, I forgot The Right Place...

Jan's review
Album 3.43 stars - meh, same as Shelley but we don't like the same songs

1. The Runaround ***
I hated this when I first heard this song. I still don't really like it but hearing it performed live is how I can look at myself in the mirror after giving it three stars. It has grown on me and I can't get it out of my head.

2. Dream Myself Awake *
Nope, I'm awake and I am actually listening to this song.

3. Heaven Knows *****
Yep. I love it. I absolutely love this song. I'm dancing to it and I believe that Taylor feels this song.

4. Gonna Move ***
I hated this when I first heard it because I love the versions by Paul Pena, Susan Tedeschi, and Taylor with LMBO performing this song so much. I'm starting to like it better now and it may move up even more. The verdict is still out on this one for me.

5. Wherever I Lay My Hat *****
This song is so beautiful that it made me tear up the first couple of times I heard it.

6. Give me tonight zero stars
Can't type, must end torture of song.

7. Just To Feel That Way ****
It makes me think of Jackson Browne or Kelly Clarkson. I like it. I can tell that if it gets overplayed on the radio(no chance with the station I listen to for me) I could come to get really sick of the song.

8. The Maze ****
I think I must be the only person living to like this song but so. I listen to different kinds of music. This is a song that I would never recognize as Taylor Hicks but I would like it all the same.

9. Places I've been ***
I like it alright.

10. Soul Thing ***
I hated this when I first heard it since I don't think it compares with the UTH version. I am starting to like it ok. I don't like the background annoyance much.

11. The Deal *****
I love this better than the original.

12. The Right Place ****
I love this song but feel that he's not completely comfortable with it yet, hence the 4 stars instead of 5. I know that over time as he performs it and owns it that it will be the best on the CD but it's not there yet.

13. Hell of a Day ****
I like the original better but like this version too.

My fave is "Heaven Knows"--hands down. I can tolerate "Give Me Tonight," but I have to go on record as confessing that I'm not too wild about "Just to Feel that Way" which most of you seem to love. It's okay, but to my ears it and "Places I've Been" sound much alike. But then I don't generally like ballads.

Oh, I like "The Right Place" since it's well done, but I place all the "slow songs" below the best of the "fast songs" any day of the week!

When I first heard the little background voice in "Soul Thing," I wasn't sure if I'd like it or not...turns out I like it a lot! I love "Gonna Move" as well, though I miss the tagging from the live versions we've heard.

Oh, and yesterday I wrote a particularly poignant comment for the post...but the site would not let me post! So y'all missed out on a real tear-jerker! =(

I just watched Taylor on Martha. I'm sorry, but he is the cutest thing evah!!!! Who would have thought last January that we would be watching him twist 22g wire around eucalyptus in Dec 2006. I wish he were my handyman.

He rocked the Bushes in Washington, too. I think he needed a little Ritalin on TRL, but as always adorable. Very cute jeans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm off to bed. I have almost OD'd on Taylor.
Sorry we missed your poignant post, Q. Computers suck sometimes.

Q - NOOOO! That is so not fair that happened. We were *robbed*

(oh, and I am in LOVE with the mini-me Taylor voice in Soul Thing)

Shelley - I haven't heard anyone say "dur" in about 15 years I think. Cracked.Me.Up.

Taylor on TRL - Wow. I had to laugh at him. He was all over the place, huh? Did y'all catch that guy right to the left of the host as she was interviewing him? If not, go back and look - it's funny!

I hesitated to comment because my thoughts on the album keep evolving. I keep hearing more nuances the more times I listen. My favorite keeps changing. One thing I'm sure of is that this is a greatly enjoyable CD!

It is remarkable that this could be released after just 6 weeks. I am so blown away by that fact that I am willing to cut some slack on the less-than-perfect technicalities here and there (too structured bass-line, overproduction, tinny piano previously mentioned). A lot of those things may have been improved given more time.

As far as Give Me Tonight goes, it's definitely the low point on the album for me. I think maybe it's underproduced. Like it's missing something, or the vocals are disconnected from (or stronger than?) the instruments. If it had a harder edge -- more bass, raw-er drums -- it could be the ultimate party song, get a lot of airtime.

And what is it with shoes these days?? Taylor's are new, Kellie's are red and high-heeled, Kat's are open-toed. Personally, I'll take Paolo Nutini's.

The overall impression I have of the album is that it's a tease. Every time Taylor talks about it, it's in conjunction with touring it. Where's the harp or the falsetto on the recording? Hardly there, but you know he'll be kicking it up in his concerts. I want more! more! more!! This album is foreplay. The concert will be orgasmic.
