Find Me and Follow Me...Traveling Monkbot Makes His Way to Edinburgh

In honor of Traveling Monkbot making it to Scotland...a little Franz Ferdinand.

Edinburgh – The Jewel in Scotland’s Crown
Text and Photos by Mind Doc
Photography Assistant: Rowan

I had heard many times of how beautiful Edinburgh is. It truly is – it is lovely and has an intimate feel to it. It has been described as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, and I would have to agree.

However, the first stop was more mundane than sublime. Off of Princes’ Street are these small alleys where there are pubs and small shops. We ducked in for lunch at Oliver’s and enjoyed a hot, inexpensive pub lunch. There is nothing like hot soup
and steak pie on a cold afternoon.

Steak and Guiness Pie with chips and soup. Yum! Note the tomato ketchup and the brown sauce. I have not figured out what it exactly is -- Rowan says that it is a staple to put on chips. It has tamarind in it. Interesting taste...I was going to ask the rather strapping young men hanging around the pub to pose with Monkbot, but I was afraid that Rowan would literally have expired from embarrassment.

Edinburgh is a great city to wander around in. Monkbot seemed to have some spiritual affinity for the place, and it was easy to see why...

This is a picture outside of Waverly Station. It is one of the main train stations in the city. As we came out of the station, we could hear bagpipes playing. This is the piper. Behind him, you can make out the city skyline a bit. The skyline is fairy-tale beautiful. You can just make out Edinburgh Castle to the right. It is perched atop the highest point in the city. Formidable, indeed.

The National Gallery of Scotland was surprising. It is small, but mighty. It is home to Scotland's greatest collection of European paintings and sculpture from the Renaissance to Post-Impressionism periods, and is one of the very finest galleries of its size in the world. It opened to the public in 1859. There were pieces by Van Dyck Gauguin, Velázquez, El Greco, Titian, and Raphael. Botticelli's Virgin Adoring the Sleeping Christ Child was literally breathtaking. Rembrandt’s self-portrait was a complete surprise. I think that is what I will remember about the gallery – it is
remarkably unassuming. You just walk around the corner and there is something that makes you stop in your tracks – awestruck.

Edinburgh Castle puts to rest all the ideas of fairy tale castles. It looks like a fortress – you can see why the castle never fell. Apparently, it has surrendered because the defenders ran out of food, but never was taken by force. It is massive. It looks like a stone dragon, perched on a crag. The guard at Edinburgh Castle was initially a bit concerned about letting us perch a monkey on the wall – in fact, she looked at us with a jaundiced eye. She soon got into the spirit of the adventure and suggested a much better view, which you see here.

Here is Monkbot at the cannons. At one o’clock each afternoon a cannon fires (but not one of these) – these are just your standard repel-the-invader cannons.

This is the Scottish National War Memorial. We could not take pictures inside, but I liked the outside as well. When you come around the corner and see it, you are immediately struck with the stern beauty of the architecture. I was almost scared to go inside, because it is very solemn.

So, Monkbot made it through to the UK in one piece, despite the fact that I was questioned by customs each and every time regarding why I had a robotic monkey in my bag. I was airy about it, as if everyone does it. Why WOULDN’T I be carrying a cymbal-crashing, antenna-wearing monkey? It seemed to work. I found this attitude to be very helpful in general and recommend it highly to anyone who takes the next leg of the journey.

Tomorrow...on to Dundee...(which, incidentally, is the name of Shelley's first dog...a beautiful male collie)

THIS IS SO GREAT!! I love all of y'alls adventures! I feel so smart and worldly - like a bit of a history and geography lesson, only one that wasn't boring and didn't make me want to write notes in class and throw things at the teacher.

I particularly love how you so nonchalantly addressed your Monkbot to customs - priceless!

Soooo, where IS Prince William?

Lovely! If there's some foreign place that I'd like to visit, it would be Scotland. And not just because of Glen, either!

I was just showing these to DH James, and he plaintively asked, "Can *I* be a Monkbot?"

I think it is VERY important to note that...because of his chilvalrous (sp?) act of carrying Q's quilt around the world...and for his patience of a saint in tolerating my whineyness in Birmingham...our dear, dear James has WAY more than earned his place in the Monkbot roster! ;)

I second the motion. Is James the 1st male monkbot? (I mean other than Taylor and GC). Q, you should be proud your DH wants to be a Monkbot. My husband looks like he's getting the strait jacket ready for me when I talk about the TM. Congratulations Mr. Q Monkbot.

These pics are great!! Mind Doc and Rowan you did a wonderful job posing le Monkbot. He's on his way to being a male supermodel. He looks very natural in all the settings.
Can't wait for the next leg of the journey.

It sounds like MindDoc, Monkbot, and Rowan are having a great time! I'm never been to Scotland and I'd love to visit. I especially love the King Monkbot pic. His majesty makes me want to pay my allegiance.

"I'm am a monkbot"
"I will do your bidding"

Q's DH was super sweet for the Austin LMBO show. He manned the MakeAWish table part of the time and I know he drove back with no hope of sleep before work.

Aww! You guys are so sweet! I told him he was an honorary Monkbot, but he insisted he wanted to be the kind that could be carried into Scotland in the arms of lovely women.

We received our CD of the Birmingham WorkPlay show, and James is clearly visible in the crowd shot in the inside cover, due to his hat. I'm sure mine is one of the many brunette heads also visible, but not quite as distinct! Whoa, memories!

James immediately downloaded it onto his mp3 player, but...to tell the truth, I haven't quite been able to bring myself to listen to it, yet. I asked James if he could hear me screaming in it. He assured me, with a long-suffering look on his face, "I could hear everyone screaming in it."

Mind Doc....are you trying to tell me that you can't buy HP sauce in the States???

Can I just say that I, too, am jellis of TM? You two got some really great pictures!

Yay! I am so glad that you like the pictures.

(I remember James! Hi, James! Men of Monkbot, unite! My husband is veeery pleased with how the pictures came out. He is hovering around the monitor.)

Oh, and Squee, I have no idea about the HP sauce. Has anyone here in the lower half of the continent eaten brown sauce? They have something called salad cream (I think) in the UK -- another thing to put on fries. I think that Things to put on Chips is on the UK Food Pyramid. It is like Miracle Whip, but more tart, I think.

Bravo, Mind Doc and Rowan,

You are excellent hosts and tour guides for the loveable Monkbot. What wonderful photos and stories!!

I am thoroughly enjoying the MB tour.

MindDoc, I've had mayonnaise on fries in Europe, Vinegar, Curry flavored Mayo but have never seen or tried the brown stuff you are talking about. I'm intrigued.

How cool! I'm with NOLA, I feel like I'm getting a bit of a geography and history lesson (my nerdiness alas does not extend to those two fields). I am reading the narratives and for some reason, I hear the voice of Ian (my favorite travel host from Globetrekker) in my head.

I especially like the photo of Monkbot with the bagpipe player. They make a nice-looking combo.

Tamarind sauce on chips. Hmm. Sounds intriguing. I use a kind of tamarind sauce for (no, not potstickers) a couple of Caribbean dishes and I love it. I wonder if it has a similar taste.

I may have to head over to New York for some pommes frites. I forget how many sauces they have available for the fries, but they just may have the tamarind sauce there. Oh wait. No. I'm allergic to potatoes.

Darn allergies ruin yet another great food-exploring mood. Curse you, confused mast cells!

Hey, hey it's the Monkbots! People say they Monkbot around. They're too busy taking pictures...to bring anybody dowwwwwn!

Way to go MD & Rowan! Y'all did a fabulous job of showing the wee lad around Edinburgh! I hope Rowan realizes that she might have about 14 Monkbots showing up on her doorstep someday hoping for the same treatment!

Ivory! I can't believe you just posted that link...I was just about to go in search of it! Great minds must think alike!

I'm definitely a sauce girl. I'll dip my fries in anything. My favorite being Ranch dressing. I'll put Ranch on anything...pizza, chips, donuts...well, maybe not donuts...

Shelley-thanks for the Franz Ferdinand video. LOVE them!! They rizock!

Alas, no ranch dressing for the fries. More's the pity. That is my sauce of choice, as well. Sigh.

Shelley- I knew you'd understand the magnitude of this news. Is this a sign of the end times...when sweet, clean, Banana Republic Jen-Jen would get down with skanked out, wanna-be Vanilla Ice, my pants are 10x to big for me K-Scum??? I better get right with Lord...asap.

Wow, there is a world outside this blog. Kind of strange to suddenly see Shelley's little gift to us out there. And the person who uploaded the video wasn't even absolutely sure where she found the song! She says it might be GC. I'm guessing it'll be just a matter of time before someone posts the appropriate credit. (I'm too lazy and hungry right now to sign up and everything in order to post at GoFish, and I'm wondering if Shelley will even want her name mentioned.)

With our Monkbot hostess already represented there, how long before TM makes an appearance with the first of his questions for Taylor?

Bama, I am sooo wanting some fries right now. Good thing I wasn't chowing down on them when I saw that little rumor you posted, else I'd either be choking on potatoes or very painfully expelling them out my nose.

And with that purty picture in mind, I'm off to find something for breakfast.

Of course Shelley was credited:

"Montage Christmas type with audio of song Taylor Baby I found somewhere Graycharles i think"

Ahem...

FedEx and Jen....are we seeing the first signs of Armageddon? Seriously...if this is true, I am truly worried about the future.

Jax already posted that it was me.

What is weird is that I thought most regulars at Gray's at least had an idea of who some of the "old-timers" were...but I guess not.

Oh well...sniff sniff...I guess my glory days at Gray's are truly over.

(Actually...I'm surprised folks even know who Gray is anymore...with how crazed some people have gotten for Taylor. It's like they are wearing their Taylor blinders.)

At 12/20/2006 09:36:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Remember back in the day when people thought that Gray might actually be Taylor?? Hahahaha! That was hilarious!

Yay for Jax having your back!

Ha! I remember, Bama.

We were a bunch of idiots.

Oh...I just e-mailed that Cindy chick who did the video and asked that she please credit me for the song. I wanted to tell her to reference my website...but I thought that would be too icky of me.

I just figured...since I worked so hard on it...I should at least ask for credit.

I'm such a baby.

Bama - Scotland welcomes all monkbot visitors. Yay! Would have to say that it was Mind Doc who took on the role of native guide, and found most of the interesting stuff to see. I am very happy to schlep alongside, but I am not a good map-reader. I get sidetracked by gift shops and cafes... I knew how to find the National Gallery, but just cos it finds you...and it is kind of awesomely unforgettable. The cafe, now, I am not so sure about. Funny arty asymmetric spilly soup-bowls. Just sayin.

I have learned from my American visitors MD and Monkbot that by drinking cups of Starbuck's on the move, a person actually sees more, does more, achieves more. When it gets dark at half-past three, wallowing in cafes over lunchtime is not the boogie for sightseeing. I have discovered coffee, too, by this means. Coffee used to be of the instant variety, a 'drink half a cup with screwed-up eyes and throw it down the sink in mild disgust' experience. Now I realise that you can get good stuff out there... a beverage-altering experience! Earl Grey tea on the hoof does not have the same impact. Guess that's maybe why it hasn't caught on.

HP sauce.....Squee, I am glad you have tasted it too - It is definitely a real cultural icon here. I am going to mastermind a brown sauce sachet raid on several local cafes (I am now a reformed cafe-wallower, and am too busy drinking/snacking on the hoof to collect them myself.) Will forward them to interested parties as requested!

Many thanks for visiting, MD and Monkbot. It was a really kewl trip.

Btw - Glen says he will continue to schlep around his hillside, kilt swinging, chopping wood and sizzling impossibly lean chunks of steak on his skillet, waiting for his Monkbot lassie.

Edinburgh is fab. Yep - the castle guard was suspicious, but it was nice to see her thaw when she saw Monkbot. He charmed her, without sayin a word. This little guy oozes schmooze.

I want some HP sauce.

I want some Glen covered in HP sauce.

Ha! So did MD spread the American disease of "busy, busy, busy"? Or was it just that you are a particularly loungey person Rowan?

Starbucks is in Scotland?? Oh dear, I wish I had a time machine and could go back to 1990 and invest in that little coffee company....

Shelley- you deserve that credit!! That was a brilliant re-working of the classic Santa Baby into what is sure to go down as an all time favorite....

At 12/20/2006 10:12:00 AM, Blogger Squeebee said...

Shelley..you are NOT an baby...that person should have looked harder to find who to credit the song to.

Rowan....we have HP sauce here in Canada....it must be the British influence. My mum was born in England, so I am well versed in the "brown sauce" phenomenon. Oh...and cider vinegar and lots of salt on chips is devine!

Ok that was me up there.

At 12/20/2006 10:16:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Shelley, you shouldn't even have to ask for credit, since it wasn't such a puzzle trying to figure it out when Gray put it on his site. I almost posted but figured it'd be better to wait for you to give the go-ahead. Plus, the aforementioned hunger and slacker mood didn't really help my cause.

It's a whole new ball game. We're old-timers at Gray, but only the other old-timers know that.

Is there a preferred recipe for this HP sauce? I am getting more and more intrigued.

By the way, yesterday was a "squander your time online checking out random videos" day for me, and I discovered Jools Holland. (Sorry, he's probably new only to me. I'm clueless when it comes to pop culture. Yet another field my nerdiness hasn't breached.)

I posted some videos on my blog of his musical guests because I was blown away by the quality of the artists he's had on his show. He's had James Morrison, Amy Winehouse, Cat Power, Sigur Ros ... and he's a keyboardist! (Sorry, random piano-playing envy spasm there.)

Hmmmm. Maybe Gray is really Jools Holland?

Bama - guilty as charged - I am a bit loungey and unproductive, and I need galvanising! No sense of whistle-stop whatsoever - we took our time and saw things at just the right pace. It was great to revisit places I hadn't seen for years, and discover new gems on my doorstep. I don't drive (blush) but am applying to learn...

Glen is anxious that any HP sauce in his vicinity may stain his kilt. He is a new breed of starched and healthy Scot.

At 12/20/2006 10:33:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Rowan, I love "funny arty asymmetric spilly soup bowls". Modern ceramic art rawks!!!

I think I hear the hoofbeats of one of the horsemen of the apocalypse in the near distance--K-Dud and Jen? I'm sending up a big "v" signal in the sky for Vince to come rescue her. What is she thinking?

Shelley, I think many of the posters over at GC are too busy fixating on the "numbahs" and can't get their heads out of their wee little arses to properly credit the creative force behind "Taylor Baby". I truly think some of them are more worried about the CDs ranking than Taylor is. He's having a good time jamming w/Popper, et al....

Back to daydreaming about Glen and his beef. (oh, and filling prescriptions for CKD patients).

P.S. I love the word "wee"

My, my, you've all been busy...WITHOUT me?!?

Monkbot MOH...I'm verklempt...

Actually, I'm nauseous. K-Skank with precious "Rachel" gets me in the gut, like John Mayer and Jessica Simpson....nearly as stomach-churning as Rowan's INSTANT coffee...ewww. Seriously, the whole situation is as upsetting as DECAFFIENATED Instant Coffee.

Oh, and Taylor's Billboard numbers are out: 299,153. Bested by Daughtry on the 1st weeks sales by about 5,000, but still a GREAT start.

Onward and upward!

P.P.S. Did you guys know there is a movie that features brown sauce in it? For the life of me I can't think of the title, but it stars the guy w/the wierd eyes from "Red Eye". It's about some slackers in Ireland and their love lives. They eat brown sauce on everything. It's a funny, sad, slice of life kind of movie.

Double D, I agree a GREAT start!!!
No need for obsessive hand-wringing.

Congrats on the hot-linking. Alas, I do not have this skill yet. I am still a freshman at Monkbot University and have much to learn.

Rowan- I, too, am very loungey. However, when I go on vacation, I am very motivated to see stuff. I would prolly get a lot more done if I was always on vacation...

I think the Monkbot will get us all out of our homes, visiting places around town that we haven't seen in years...or have never been to and always wanted to see.

Ivory- I like that poem on your blog. VERY MUCH. How come I didn't know you were so talented? Humble much??!

Naw...I think Jesse James is a good man. They're kinda cute together.

It's better than Renee Zellweger and Jack White when they dated. (Not that I don't like Jack...just not with her.)

So, poor Tay-Tay didn't make #1 and didn't beat Chris in sales. I guess I should've bought more than one album.

I am so thrilled to see the Traveling Monkbot in his finds throughout the world. I have always wanted to travel to Scotland so thank you dear monkbots for allowing us to travel vicariously with you and TM. Y'all are the best. Maybe one day I'll get over the pond to see all of those lovely sights. Also I was thrilled to see the Go Fish site and the poetcindy for picking Shell's song to play in her slideshow. Shell what a neat gift for all of us to hear first from you, the Original "Taylor Baby" then to hear it on another website (Poetcindy did give you credit for singing the song) We all feel great about it! Merry Christmas you dear Monkbots!!

I saw the "Taylor Baby" this morning & posted in the comments that it was the "Monkbot Mistress" herself (now I find that title kinky.. need to replace with Goddess) complete with a link to here. Now Cindy has updated it with COMPLETE credit & link!!

WOOOOOOO

Shelley... please get as big of a kick out of this as we do. The song is awesome... folks over at "The Boogie" wanting to know where was this recorded and when ... THEN they are all thrilled when they find out it is you. I, however, am still partial to my own private(?) "Oh Holy Night". But I have to tell you... there is a commercial playing in our area that uses the "Santa Bay" song in it... makes me smile everytime I hear it.

Your voice is beautiful, it matches your spirit.

I'm still trying to get back in the swing of things... still not feeling well but this definately made me smile today..

MonkBot, MindDoc & Rowan ... how cool is all of this... I love this site!

Can I ask a question and not get pummeled by tomatoes? Um ... who is Glen?

Bama, you're making me blush. I was just about to take that poem down too, because I didn't like it as much the third or fourth time I read it.

Funny, I started that blog just as a place to put my poetry, music, photographs, etc. in. Then just as I set everything up and firmly resolved to write regularly, Graycharles happened and that was the end of my online free time.

Then just as GC went into hiatus, I discover Shelley's site. Hence the lack of any regular form of activity on my blog. Oh well.

In hindsight, I traded up with all these newly discovered artists, geography lessons, pop culture shots and crazy goober talk. It's not like I had any earth-shattering creative flashes waiting to come out anyway.

(Now I am off to Google "Jack White" and "Jesse James" because I don't know who these are either. But maybe I will have some coffee first. Don't worry, DD, it's not instant decaf.)

What an excellent adventure!!!!! Scotland is my favorite place in the world. I would move there if I could get a job that pays what I am paid here...or "Ben" who would make it alright for me not to have own so much.

MindDoc and Rowan...us MonkBots are dead chuffed with your tales!

MonkBot side note: Sorry I haven't been posting much lately...Things have been weird on the job...let's just say I have been interviewing internally. Looks like resolution is dawning soon. Very positive crossroads...hopefully.

I hate to bring the mood down....but this story has been consuming me for the last week. I'm so sad that this is the outcome. I'm always so sad for families that can't have closure...

That story is soo sad. It would be hard not to have closure. I'm glad we're all a non-thrill seeking lot in my family. No mountain climbers among us.

On a brighter note, I just read that Taylor is performing with Journey and Styx at Mardi Gras--lucky nolagirl! Styx is one of my all time favorite bands. How about this for a lyric change: domo arygotto Mr. Monkboto! (I'm sure I butchered the spelling)

I had a very long, but productive, day at work, it is nice to see lots of folks here.

Shelley! You are famous! I am glad that people (other than us, of course) got to hear your beautiful voice. Taylor baby is nice, but I am with Jax -- I love O Holy Night.

The montage (as are all such things -- to me at least) is a little incomprehensible. But I am not the montage-producing type. However, if I WAS going to do one, I would use Taylor Baby. Prolly for a different effect, though.

Bama -- It was funny but one of the few times I really surprised Rowan was when I ordered a cup of coffee and took it with me. She was clearly having difficulty processing the idea that we would not sit down and drink it, like civilized people. I felt like I had American-ness sticking out all over me. She was polite about it, but I could really tell that the idea was foreign to her. People there seem to have a coffee as a social event. I know that I use it for the chemical properties. I did manage to sit down and linger over a cup now and then. And I did not even fidget.

MD - you did very well, not to fidget. I have been giving the whole transatlantic cross-cultural coffee thang a lot of thought. It interests me greatly. What it boils down to is that in the UK, we use coffee as a euphemism for eating cake. We purport to go into a cafe and sit for a quick coffee, but we know it is just a conscience-salving means of approaching the oncoming carb-fest. We are a nation ob biscuit and pastry fiends. There was a biscuit advert which summed the whole thing up, "McVites Rich Tea biscuit...a drink's too wet without one."

The coffee has always been a secondary issue over here, because the coffee has been bad. Very bad. Undrinkable. This made it a bit irksome to have to order it at all, but there you go. You can't just go in and order a cake, bold as brass. There are little social dances to be danced.

Well...the recent aquisition of good coffee outlets has changed things. I see people beginning to walk around with big cups made of stiff card, with funny plastic lids with holes, so the coffee doesn't spill. I am intrigued. The coffee is very good. In itself. For itself. An experience which goes beyond the whole cake thing. This is something new, and yes, MD - you are spot on - I am processing. I am glad to be introduced to good coffee - for itself, and also, because it may mean fewer cakes on the horizon, and my arteries are leaping up and punching the air. (Well, not literally, as that would likely interfere with my at best, dodgy typing.) Starbuck's rawks.

Oh, MD and Rowan! I am so glad you girls are hanging at Monkbot. Y'all are so entertaining!

Rowan- We don't need any pretense to eat cake here. We just bust in, sit down, and yell out...."Cake! Bring me cake, waiter! Bring me lots of cake!"

Bama, you forget the "Desserts! More desserts!"

*with an imperious pointing of the spoon, a la Lilo*

I cannot forget that which I never knew! (I wish I knew...)

I've had three donuts already today...and only one cuppa da joe. I would have more donuts but people are looking at me funny.

You are all cracking me up! Rowan, hands down the best discourse on the social implications of coffee and cake that I've read in a looong time. And mind you, I read a lot of inane stuff. 'Cause I hafta keep up with all those, you know, lasers.

I have been a slacker of a Monkbot falling behind on reading the comments. Been busy the past days. Shrew, how goes the internal interviewing? I've been polishing up my resume for some external interviewing myself.

I am with the "Desserts! More desserts!" group. In fact, that is a given in my family. You may be stuffed after dinner, but there's always room in the stomach that's exclusively for dessert.

And so, after demurely requesting the dessert menu then almost apologetically (almost) ordering everything on page 2, we then add, "Oh, and please don't forget extra weapons." Yes, they're not just forks and teaspoons. They are our implements of war. (Not that we would be above using our bare hands if the need arises.)
